The project addresses three questions. Do sacred rites and rituals contribute to the healing that occurs in the pastoral counseling relationship? How are sacred rites and rituals therapeutic?  Under what circumstances do rites and rituals bring healing?  Five counseling cases from the author's pastoral counseling practice are presented and analyzed using a qualitative methodology. Christians, like non-Christians, are hurting.  These hurts are physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual.  Intimacy with God and his Word, appropriation of the cross, and reliance on the Holy Spirit were taught as the essential dynamics of all healing prayer ministries. Eleven participants met for twelve weeks.  A pre- and post-test questionnaire measured the effectiveness of their ability to minister healing.  Evaluation of the data showed the participants learned the healing paradigm. A post-test helped determine participant experiences and the impact of course components on participant healing.  Results show that all students had beneficial experiences; greatest healing occurred in participants' ability to trust God, embrace truth and forgive. Less than fifty percent had negative experiences; most negative experiences involved group conflict. Method: from the fields of suicidology, death and dying, theology, and pastoral care, the author presents characteristics of adolescent suicidal behaviour, explores despair and hope, applies these understandings to the process of healing, and compares the research to informed responses from United Church of Christ pastors. Liberals are very cautious about being too involved in healing and deliverance.  Liberal congregation members go to fundamentalist healing centers, and return on Sunday mornings to their own congregations.  This project investigated views from churches with members of African background about their belief in healing and deliverance. This is a speech act spoken by Jesus in order to effect healing in the story. My beginning thesis was that when the preacher's exegetical, interpretive and homiletic methods are informed by a combination of speech act theory, principles of oral storytelling and issues of social stress, the congregation can experience a kind of healing at identifiable moments in the sermon.  One significant finding for the moment of holy utterance in the sermon is that repeating the holy utterance at different moments of the direct address to the congregation, etc. creates proper space to allow for the congregation to experience holy utterance.  My more significant discovery is that holy utterance as proclamation that heals is a paradigm for all preaching. This is important to the field of homiletics for three reasons.  First, this thesis presents an exploration of preaching that is more consistent with our post-modern world.  Second, it seeks to bring together some of recent homiletical thought into a homiletical art form.
