Thirty cancer patients were interviewed using questionnaires: one gathered personal background and medical information and the other assessed spiritual well-being.  The findings indicated that religious beliefs were significant.  Daily prayer was associated with spiritual well-being, but religious affiliation and church attendance were not. The ten topics covered in group study sessions were: assurance of salvation, the lordship of Christ, the need for spiritual growth, a daily quiet time, prayer, Bible study, the church, witnessing, God's will, and personal relationships. The research focused on how ten patients responded to the process of a chaplain obtaining a spiritual life review, and then compared their physical, cognitive, and affective responses to twenty patients in two control groups.  All thirty patients' responses were measured at the beginning and the conclusion of the study. It is the doctrine which grew out of Martin Luther's Reformation experience.  The author entered a study of biblical, theological, and historical and confessional foundations which would help to create a balanced Lutheran spirituality centered on both doctrine and experience.  After a study of the conceptual framework for spirituality, the author sampled the understanding and practice of the spiritual life of 10 percent of the congregation.
