This thesis challenges dominant narratives that assume that queer folk either abandon religion or escape to urban centers. Drawing heavily from qualitative data obtained from surveying and interviewing 12 queer Christians with lived experience within rural contexts, this study reveals how faith is sustained, reimagined, and reinterpreted despite exclusion, spiritual trauma, and in many cases limited access to affirming communities. Integrating queer and liberation theology as well as sociological analysis of rural religious and social contexts, this project emphasizes lived experience as a source of theological wisdom. The respondents speak to enduring relationships with God, separating divine constancy with failure of the religious institution, and engaging in reinterpretations through a queer lens that is rooted in love, justice, grace, and Jesus’ message.\r\n\r\nThe findings shine a light on how rural dynamics, especially the heightened visibility, social policing, and the centralized role of the church as a community institution, increase both the risks of exclusion but also speak to the transformative power of affirmation. Even with varying relationships to organized religion, all respondents shared a sustained faith commitment and a desire to ethically engage scripture, which is shaped by resilience and a deep hope for transformation among the church. Stained-Glass Queer Folks argues that queer Christians in rural contexts are not to be sidelined in Christianity’s future but offer vital insights, which challenge exclusionary and harmful interpretations of faith and aim to reimagine the Christian community as a space of belonging, inclusion, grace, and accountability. \r\n"],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/3a276156-2030-4889-9d10-abbf4005e1aa?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["3a276156-2030-4889-9d10-abbf4005e1aa"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["3a276156-2030-4889-9d10-abbf4005e1aa"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"read_access_person_ssim":["dani.patrick@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1862661147750039552,"timestamp":"2026-04-16T20:41:36.777Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2026-01-15T22:41:32Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2026-01-15T22:41:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ba1923ac-67a6-4cd7-9807-dc9f5c0cebda","accessControl_ssim":["7674a2c2-4f4a-440d-b300-0cea5f5bb263"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["53c67891-28b0-4cc7-90c6-569a51b7443c"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["53c67891-28b0-4cc7-90c6-569a51b7443c"],"depositor_ssim":["rmendez@student.ctu.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["rmendez@student.ctu.edu"],"title_tesim":["To be known is to be loved: A call to journey alongside Latino/a communities for effective pastoral leadership"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2026-01-15T22:41:31Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2026-01-15T22:41:31Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f8ff6cb9-f506-4259-b037-695cc4a75be3"],"hasLease_ssim":["4f0eb379-d321-4485-a3f3-91e2861e82a9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"year_tesim":["2025"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. To be known requires respect and understanding of their communities’ pastoral needs and religious practices. Sadly, many leaders have a colonial mentality that foments stereotypes and even prejudice toward Hispanics. The only way to move beyond this mentality is to sincerely enter into relationships with Latino(a)s, and understand how they see themselves. This respectful understanding must begin with our Church leaders. Latino/as want to share their cultural and religious practices that connect them to their families and ancestors. Although the Hispanic Catholics play a vital role in the life of the Church, barriers to inclusion remain. Hispanic Catholics want to fully participate in the Church’s mission to serve the whole community. They are eager to share their gifts through collaborative service in their parishes.\r\n\r\nIn this thesis project I reveal Hispanic communities that are already present but not often seen. I introduce their religious practices to the larger community including church leaders. I focus on the religious practice called Adoración Nocturna Mexicana (Mexican Nocturnal Adoration). A practice where members of the Mexican Catholic communities spend the night in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar where, like all Catholics, they worship the true presence of Jesus Christ in the consecrated hosts reposited in the Tabernacle and exposed in the monstrance on the altar during nocturnal adoration vigil. The study shows how Hispanics have historically and are presently practicing nocturnal adoration as part of their popular religious practices. More importantly, I explore what drives them toward these religious practices. By listening to their stories, I have heard their heartfelt voices as they express their needs and desires, spiritually, socially, and emotionally. I also demonstrate how they emulate the Samaritan woman at the well (John: 4-42), and like her are moved to evangelization when they also come to the realization of being known and therefore loved by Christ. \r\n\r\nI delve into the pastoral, social, and theological dimensions of Hispanic popular Catholicism and devotional practices, referred to as Santo praxis and lo cotidiano (the everyday). \r\n\r\nThe goal is to demonstrate how popular religious devotion is forged in the historical struggles of people who are oppressed. I describe in detail the rituals promoted by Adoración Nocturna Mexicana. \r\n\r\nAnd finally, share a theological reflection of the study’s findings and a pastoral response related to the importance of intercultural competence for effective leadership and accompaniment of Hispanic communities.\r\n"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/53c67891-28b0-4cc7-90c6-569a51b7443c?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["53c67891-28b0-4cc7-90c6-569a51b7443c"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["53c67891-28b0-4cc7-90c6-569a51b7443c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["rmendez@student.ctu.edu"],"_version_":1854424409589153792,"timestamp":"2026-01-15T22:42:11.142Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"43825390-f3da-442d-b82b-7734037592a3","accessControl_ssim":["91888680-792b-41c6-9359-6d0afff55add"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Holy fun: a path to church consolidation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:37Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["035b76a9-3948-4bed-8182-e02a82642534"],"hasLease_ssim":["2e2399e9-7747-48be-b7df-f48dcb0563de"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2012"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Drawing from Johan Huizinga, James Evans, Henri Nouwen, and Harvey Cox, the element of play is defined and placed firmly within the soul of the church and its people. Hugo Rahner, Edwin Friedman, Martin Marty, and Michael Koppel laid the groundwork for the element, to “not-take-yourself-too-seriously.” This embodied theology is further elucidated by Plato, Jurgen Moltman, Julia Cameron and Mary Hess. The term Holy Fun seems oxymoronic. How can one have fun in the pursuit of the Holy or conversely, how can one be holy while having fun? But the idea of Holy Fun is counterintuitive for most folks. Holy Fun does include a Theology of Fun. Although Holy Fun can be applied to all aspects of ministry, including conflict management, educational approaches, outreach ministry, staffing, leadership training, mission life, and worship, its potential employment is only limited by the imagination. I have helped to consolidate four United Church of Christ congregations with Holy Fun as the vehicle of change. This path to church consolidation is presented as a case study in Holy Fun. This is not a “how to” program that can be completed step by step, but a philosophy of playful and lighthearted approach to all aspects of ministry that can be learned by pastors, church leaders and pew sitters and will aid congregations in their futuring together."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860296636825600,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:42.475Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-05-16T16:54:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-05-16T16:54:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"23bb5afd-4e92-4b5e-991c-950967b9b892","accessControl_ssim":["6930ec5c-f7e1-4602-895b-3452f144cbe9"],"depositor_ssim":["dminadmin@tiu.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["dminadmin@tiu.edu"],"title_tesim":["Cultivating Prayer in the Life and Ministry of Churches: A Study of Family Christian Center of Munster, Indiana "],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-05-16T16:54:54Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-05-16T16:54:54Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9aa041e4-9d1c-4ece-8a03-6efac7381e01"],"hasLease_ssim":["83ead65b-7edc-472d-8155-fe89d4dc26b4"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity International University"],"year_tesim":["2025"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Drawing upon biblical theology, the practices of the early church, the experience and practice of 18 churches and prayer ministries notable for their example and influence, the study examines principles for developing sustained, faith-filled prayer ministry. There has been decline in prayer among American Christians due to distractions, theological misconceptions, and diminished expectancy, and these trends undermine the transformative power of the American Church. Through a review of Scripture, early Church Fathers, and contemporary best practices, the project emphasizes the indispensable role of prayer in individual and corporate life. The work proposes a biblically grounded and practically applicable model of prayer ministry tailored for evangelical and charismatic churches, incorporating structured teaching, consistent practice, and especially leadership example. Data from the author’s home church Family Christian Center of Munster, IN, including prayer meeting participation and documented answered prayers, demonstrates the effectiveness of such a model. Ultimately, this project advocates for the pastoral leadership to champion a culture of expectant prayer, positioning the Church as a prophetic community that partners with God in shaping history through intercession."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["dminadmin@tiu.edu"],"_version_":1832296904363343872,"timestamp":"2025-05-16T16:54:57.722Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-04-28T20:49:34Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-05-02T19:46:21Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"76e5cc26-a1a8-4015-a365-b2c4c6b1b999","accessControl_ssim":["a5add7f6-0c1e-405b-a8b8-2679cdb953d3"],"depositor_ssim":["dminadmin@tiu.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["dminadmin@tiu.edu"],"title_tesim":["Utilizing the Ministry of Deliverance and Biblical Counseling as Effective Discipleship Strategies in Fulfilling the Great Commission"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-04-28T20:49:33Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-05-02T19:46:21Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["49cb1e97-1f21-449f-9a05-5924a93aa198"],"hasLease_ssim":["e9c08662-f7bc-42f9-8590-3c9a784977f9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity International University"],"year_tesim":["2025"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. This had never happened before in the church’s history, and it all began during a recent sermon series in the book of Acts. Deliverance has since become an expected phenomenon that the church leadership prepares for every week now. This Doctor of Ministry project sought to examine how to effectively bring together the ministry of deliverance along with the ministry of Biblical Counseling (intensive discipleship) to help those who have been set free maintain their freedom and live the Spirit-filled life. This involved a three-step process: (1) An initial interview to determine the direction of the intervention, (2) three fifty-minute biblical counseling sessions over a period of twenty-one days during which relevant action items were assigned, and (3) a final interview to determine the effectiveness of the intervention. Qualitative research was done through analyzing the final interview data. Some\r\nmajor findings within the twenty-one day period included that an exceeding majority of participants (90%) experienced freedom from bondage to struggles related to former demonic strongholds prior to their deliverance, and following through on action items (especially in actively forgiving others) had a strong correlation with a sense of overall spiritual growth. The research was conclusive that this twenty-one day process is a feasible and effective program for\r\nthose delivered from demonic strongholds, to jumpstart them into a larger discipleship process. It can be logically deduced that it should also be applicable to ministering to anyone who may be caught in the throes of battling the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil (cf. Ephesians 2:1-3). Because this was a qualitative study, the findings cannot be generalized.\r\nFurther studies in different contexts are recommended to help determine
