The research focused on how ten patients responded to the process of a chaplain obtaining a spiritual life review, and then compared their physical, cognitive, and affective responses to twenty patients in two control groups.  All thirty patients' responses were measured at the beginning and the conclusion of the study. The study demonstrates that a small group of people, with an intentional agenda of spirituality and stewardship, can come to grips with its own attitudes toward stewardship and become a cohesive, intentional cadre of people within a local congregation.  Stewardship is understood as a cosmic orientation with God as the householder, Christ as the chief steward, and humanity as the stewards of the cosmos. It is the doctrine which grew out of Martin Luther's Reformation experience.  The author entered a study of biblical, theological, and historical and confessional foundations which would help to create a balanced Lutheran spirituality centered on both doctrine and experience.  After a study of the conceptual framework for spirituality, the author sampled the understanding and practice of the spiritual life of 10 percent of the congregation. The model can be adapted for use in different ministries, although this project focuses on the ministry of pastoral counseling.  The qualitative study yielded some initial insights that are tentative and inconclusive.
