It is written from the perspective of a local church pastor who addresses the struggle of making Christian maturity the goal of ministry. It is based on the writings of the Apostle Paul, who considered the maturity of Christians the test of the quality of his ministry. The primary question for a pastor is: How will Christians develop toward spiritual maturity? Four erroneous assumptions are addressed that can prevent growth to completion after conversion. A spiritual theology of maturity is built on a study of Paul's use fo the term teleios. Its etymology and usage are summarized to create a biblical theology of spiritual maturity. Then it is interpreted through the lens of systems theory, which emphasizes the interrelationships and interactions in the processes of growth. A literature review adds a broader perspective of Pauline categories for growth and maturity in Christ. Thus, a holistic view is offered which formulates the content and contexts necessary for development to maturity. The thesis material is then reformatted in a manual that is useful for laypeople. The series of lessons are formatted to provide an overview of Paul's view of maturity, while taking the persons through the processes of growth in Christ. It seeks to provide material that will develop persons in Christlikeness."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131268207869952,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:44:47.802Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:55:17Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:52:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3e603abf-f34d-42c0-8cb4-f65c41184279","accessControl_ssim":["457903a3-90d2-438f-9c0c-86cda6636525"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Assimilating new members into the C\u0026MA: communicating vision and passion"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:55:13Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:56:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["63bc247d-1977-4cd0-8650-4ed3bb4c6b82"],"hasLease_ssim":["f722a674-5537-4abd-8b11-8fbf159a3341"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Philip Steyne"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John G Healey"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christian and Missionary Alliance","Spiritual life--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The study identifies strategies that enable church members to assimilate the distinctives of the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Canada. Findings show most pastors believe they are too busy to pray; adversity reminds pastors of their deeper need for God through prayer; the presence of God in prayer comes most often through the means of grace and especially through corporate worship; and, mentors give the greatest influence on practicing prayer."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133959280656384,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:27:34.209Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:02:36Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:32:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5c4b502e-d367-4cdf-8f9f-faec04583afc","accessControl_ssim":["5a3ab7d6-3f7b-4b42-9599-1ec15dcf58de"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Celtic spirituality: a means toward experiencing God's presence"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:02:35Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:50:52Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5551bc59-51fd-49a5-8f88-5fe3424d6a0e"],"hasLease_ssim":["e5556dbc-0cbb-4b11-b42a-ae93d7125b06"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Joel B Green"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["William S Parks"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Celtic Church","Spiritual life--Christianity","Presence of God"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Celtic Christians of the first millennium are characterized by their view of the pervasive presence of God in the lives of individuals as evidenced by their prayers. This project explores the effect of introducing the Celtic understanding of God's presence in the world on the religious and prayer practices of college students. A small group of students met weekly to discuss articles on Celtic spirituality and to review prayers from the Celtic tradition. A pre- and posttest design with no comparison group measured changes in their perception of the presence of God in their lives. They also recorded daily responses to two questions: How have I experienced the presence of God today? and How have I reacted to the presence of God today? These responses were coded using categories suggested by perceived manifestations of God's presence in a person's life: connectedness with God, others, and creation; right relationships; a greater sense of the greatness of God; occurrence of private prayer and corporate worship; acceptance of self and one's gifts; a sense of being led or called; freedom and peace in the midst of crisis or calamity; sacrifice and power in daily life; and, other categories that emerged from the data. This study suggests that the participants experienced the truth communicated in Scripture that God is present in our world and that God's presence is something that can be experienced in a variety of ways and places, chiefly through a sense of connectedness with other persons rather than directly to God or to creation. Furthermore it suggests that being exposed to a different view of God's presence can increase a person's sensitivity to that presence. Participants expressed an appreciation for the Celtic integration of the Christian faith into all aspects of their lives and came to see the reality that all that we do is prayer. However, this awareness did not substantially affect the time and manner in which the participants prayed to God."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134249379692544,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:32:10.869Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:10:37Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:36:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ec9092de-d6a3-458d-99cd-7440e124fa8b","accessControl_ssim":["2380b9cc-ae3b-40a3-93e9-1cef8b4e74e5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Spirituality and healthcare: renewing old ties, forging a new partnership"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:10:36Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:53:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d26d9790-c308-4b92-b69a-c2d8de80833e"],"hasLease_ssim":["6d0dedd7-27a3-4f10-a677-005ce9a6b16e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Patricia Schoelles"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Richard C McCaughey"],"publisher_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Religion","Health","Spiritual life--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis demonstrates that spiritual health and physical health are an integrated whole and, therefore, should not be treated separately in our community healthcare settings. Further, this thesis posits that spiritual care professionals (e.g. chaplains) need to move from strictly ancillary support toward the practice of integrative medicine. The thesis begins with an historical perspective which outlines the gradual bifurcation between spirituality and healthcare in the Western world. This split was occasioned principally by the European Church's growing emphasis on the salvation of souls, and by science's growing dominion over the physical and natural worlds. This section ends with evidence of an emerging reintegration of spirituality and healthcare. With the understanding that such a reintegration requires an inclusive definition of spirituality, the thesis posits a definition of spirituality unrelated directly to religion and religious practices. A discussion follows utilizing the development of Old Testament spirituality to understand the relationship between medical crisis and spiritual crisis. This is followed by an extensive presentation of the efforts of scientific researchers to demonstrate the relationship between spirituality/religiosity and physical health. The last substantive chapter of this thesis is devoted to the writer's efforts as a professional healthcare chaplain to help make spiritual care an integral part of healthcare. The results of his practice of integrative medicine are outlined in the appendices."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130745081692160,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:36:28.910Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:07:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:51:51Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"397d2027-c0ca-4a00-ba0c-6fe22cf17579","accessControl_ssim":["0aeebcab-8aec-4307-a75f-de6959d5cde3"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A process for the discovery and discernment of a congregation's religious convictions and spirituality through their stories"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:07:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:47:58Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["de85a7ff-f897-4d1e-b282-82624a8753e5"],"hasLease_ssim":["5158a9f1-f430-478f-b46e-ec23ecbf3b5e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Stanley P Saunders"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Kathleen L Weller"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Spiritual life--Christianity","Storytelling--Religious aspects--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The faith stories of congregation members often remain an untapped source for pastors as they lead a new ministry or continue leading a congregation. research discloses that through the process of story collection and discernment, a pastor can more fully understand a congregation's convictions and spirituality, which undergird its ministry praxis, and thereby engage a congregation from the places God has already led them.
