Services at the Otterbein Retirement Community, Lebanon, Ohio. The goal was to improve the quality of 'spiritual' life of the participants through a primary focus of 'spiritual painting' accompanied by prayer, meditation, and Bible story reading. Most of the participants suffered from either or both mental and physical disability. Even though normal communication and activity participation was somewhat limited, meaningful qualitative and quantitative assessments were obtained. After examining biblical precedents for praying together in the Old and New Testaments, including the life of Jesus and the practice of the early church, this work assesses the challenge of maintaining a practical balance between prayer and action in the life of the church and individual believers. The goal of this course was to teach participants the biblical principles which lead to spiritual growth, as well as scriptural standards by which to evaluate key aspects of their lives.  Learners then moved from self-evaluation to setting written goals that drew them closer to God's standard for their lives.  Finally, participants designed a customized spiritual growth strategy, including specific action steps to reach their goals. This project describes and critiques spiritual development programs at four Nazarene universities in North America.  The study explores the interaction between a Wesleyan understanding of sanctification and spiritual formation. Information gathered through open-ended interviews was used to determine what programs were most effective. A lectionary study book on suffering and three specific psalms was prepared.  A diverse group of pastors was recruited to take part in the study and preach a three-Sunday sermon series on three lament psalms.  The goal was to move congregants from cultural forms of denial of suffering to a biblical theology of communicating suffering. The author argues that in order for nurses to deliver comprehensive, holistic care of persons with cancer, nurse educators must modify their curricula and clinical training programs.  She urges educators to include a historical perspective of who nurses have been throughout the history of the Christian church, encourage spiritual self-exploration and training in their students, and reclaim the work of the forerunner of spiritual care in nursing, Florence Nightingale.
