This study describes how the researcher presented Merton's understanding about the Cross to a group of adults who were struggling with issues related to their journey through mid-life.  Two procedures were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention: a qualitative approach involved the use of free-story interviews, anecdotes, and comments by the participants; and, a quantitative approach was utilized which involved the Spiritual Well-Being Scale. The spiritual well-being inventory did not indicate any statistically significant changes for the group in any of its measures of religion, existential or spiritual well-being.  However, the data gathered by more qualitative approaches indicated that this intervention can have an impact upon the lives of adult lay people. The goal of this project was to develop and test an interdisciplinary resource for enabling small groups of persons to assess their spiritual journeys and to plan concrete strategies for spiritual growth.  The resource is conceived as a seven-step spiritual growth planning model, implemented in a six-session format for small groups of eight to twelve persons.  The resource was developed, then tested in three congregations with three different leaders. Three focus groups helped understanding of issues, fashioning of goals, and crafting of the 'faith and reading survey.'  An nth name selection from a church list in a 4,000 sample and 1,021 useable responses.  The survey measured demographics, five behavioral and attitudinal areas of reading, and horizontal and vertical faith levels, making it possible to relate faith level development to religious readership. It was hoped that research would determine religious education would raise one's level of faith maturing and in effect bring about a higher level of church development.  A survey was conducted on twelve (12) subjects of the Third Mt Zion Baptist Church of Caroline County.  The subjects were evaluated through the use of two instruments: Margaret G Alter's Christian experience inventory, and Peter Benson's research project on faith maturity.  The research hypothesis explored the differences between horizontal and vertical faith, and the Christian experience inventory. However, the CEI instrument proved to be more helpful in measuring faith maturity in five areas: trust in God, growth in faith, experience of cost of faith, concern for others, and justification of faith. Spiritual well-being is defined as Christlikeness related to mankind as created in the image of God.  The eight categories of Christian maturity measured by the Religious Status Inventory, developed at Fuller Graduate School of Psychology, further refine the definition of spiritual well-being. Six lay persons shared their vocational journeys in relation to work, lifestyle, and their calling in the Body of Christ.  They were prepared by classes, group meetings, and pastoral sermons and dialogue.  Evocative questions developed thinking about vocational meaning.  The project was grounded in biblical and ethical thought about vocation, psychological research in speech as commitment, and faith development through educational methodology.
