The curriculum encourages participation in spiritual formation exercises, communion, and fellowship that open the way for a deeper relationship with God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The retreat model was reviewed and evaluated by a panel of experts in the fields of spiritual formation and Christian leadership. The project introduced the participants to the Sayings and the positive leadership the Sayings give to Christian spirituality. Through a sermon series, a focus group Bible study, and questionnaires, the project sought to discover biblical and theological correspondence with the denomination's position. The key conclusion of the research was that with some exception there was among the congregation congruence with the denomination's doctrinal statement on a vital teaching that seems unpopular or unwelcome in the current climate of 'felt-needs' ministry. The congregation was surveyed using the REVEAL Spiritual Life Survey. The researcher then led a strategic planning process to clarify the purpose, vision, values, and direction of the church. Changes were implemented based on survey data and group input before the same survey was administered again. Christian spiritual formation is the process whereby Christians are conformed to the image of Christ. Extroverted Christian women (tested using Myers Briggs Type Indicator) participated in group practice of spiritual disciplines over a four month period. Quantitative analysis included a behavioral questionnaire and the Spiritual Assessment Inventory. Qualitative analysis was based on individual interviews. Pastor-spiritual directors, elders, and scholars in spirituality were interviewed. The author explored his congregation's historical and sociological setting. His findings indicate a disconnection between reason and spirituality. Spiritual direction is emerging in a church crisis of spiritual decline. For historical perspective, he turned to John Calvin, Karl Rahner, and Howard Thurman. Additional insights came from biblical study, spiritual theologians, and contemporary church leaders. The research project invited participants to take nature photographs and reflect on them with a scripture passage, prayer or devotional thought. Each participant presented their photos and spiritual reflections to a study group for discussion.
