But what does that change look like in the life of a believer? How is that changed developed? What part does the church play in the process of transformation? This dissertation explores the relationship between what pastors believe about personal transformation and how they approach the spiritual development of parishioners. While considering the wisdom of current writers and researchers, the study focuses on the thought and practice of 50 churches in the San Francisco Bay area of California and more specifically on five sample churches that are creatively exploring how to develop believers to spiritual maturity. The study concludes that there is a great need for a clearly articulated theology of change and for ministry designs that bring that theology to life. This dissertation is intended to contribute to the larger, ongoing conversation of spiritual formation. It offers a framework for developing a biblical theology of change and proposes corresponding approaches to worship, preaching, prayer, community and spiritual disciplines."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["910240dd-6bfb-49cb-ab06-1b8de036aac8"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132190711480320,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:59:27.570Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:45:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:14:06Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c4826c0f-dcbe-4809-b689-ec4ef41b7744","accessControl_ssim":["0eca9e34-233a-40e2-8c75-ad26b0089146"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Exploring the role of intentional Sabbath practices in the Christian spiritual formation of families with young children"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:45:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:46:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["23256bd9-e479-4e58-8070-6f8ed0cc7f7c"],"hasLease_ssim":["bf617486-0987-42e3-b78f-950026185de8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Rodger Nishioka","David L Bartlett"],"year_tesim":["2011"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jerry Douglas Adkins"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Faith development","Sabbath","Spiritual life--Christianity","Family life education--Religious aspects--Christianity","Children--Religious life"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Awareness of biblical/historical experiences of Sabbath, and an understanding of Sabbath practices, can provide unrealized possibilities for the journey of spiritual formation within a family. This project focuses on families in a particular congregation, and upon the noticeable impact of intentional Sabbath practices within their homes. The Participatory Action Research model of qualitative research is utilized in the development of this project. After surveying his context, the author facilitated a series of presentations on Sabbath. Following an extended period of time for participants to engage Sabbath practices, further data is collected. The before and after data are contrasted. The relational benefits of practicing Sabbath are detailed, and implications are made for the church at large."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129341098196992,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:14:09.967Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:45:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:57:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5a6ac6da-18bd-41d2-b436-7d23660fd798","accessControl_ssim":["18842028-ca50-4e95-9fa1-9ccc3416288c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Practices before we preach"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:45:04Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:47:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["43a26d1d-db92-4ff9-89d4-98e095edd25c"],"hasLease_ssim":["93de7342-4f5c-427f-a70a-b8aeb522d6b6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Anna Carter Florence"],"year_tesim":["2011"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Glenda Lee Hollingshead"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Religious life","Spiritual life--Christianity","Bible--Homiletic use","Preaching--Study and teaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The question of the importance of spiritual practices to the sermon preparation process is an issue for pastors today. The research involved a twelve-week study of a lectionary group of preachers, interviews of numerous preachers outside the group, and journal entries.
