The project used a varied methodology including library and proactive qualitative and quantitative research. Qualitative research included videotaped sections oft he spiritual formation program in a local church and participants' journals of the experiences of praying with pets over the same period of time. The qualitative research, a survey to assess individuals' prayer frequency and their openness for integrating animals into spiritual practices was administered in three churches. The team was guided through one action research cycle using the spiritual practices of silence and solitude, reflection and journaling, prayer and Lectio Divina for twenty weeks. Data was gathered through written narratives and group interviews and analyzed by qualitative methods. The author explored how reclaiming the model of prayer found in the Psalms and its undergirding theology may offer a healthier model of prayer. Lectio Divina was introduced as a vehicle to encourage retreat participants to write their own poem/prayers. Post-retreat surveys of the content and ways in which participants prayer, before and after the retreat, indicated that re-appropriating the hutzpa theology found in the psalms, along with the holistic practice of Lectio Divina encouraged people to reclaim their authentic voices in prayer."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719344103489536,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:48:35.211Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:28:11Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:42:51Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"565f7196-4bba-4b53-a4fb-632787784b39","accessControl_ssim":["1f98bee9-5206-4258-8e97-1254569bd61c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Real food, real eating, real communion: eating like Jesus in twenty-first century progressive, Free Church congregations"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:28:10Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:39:52Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["32424dcd-b301-45f0-bec4-5793c1615864"],"hasLease_ssim":["ae7d4478-8eba-4250-b0f8-73867cc7b9bb"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Stephen Sprinkle"],"year_tesim":["2012"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["James C Gregg"],"keyword_tesim":["Agape feast"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Lord's Supper--Celebration","Worship","Liturgics","Free churches","Spiritual life--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The author's thesis is that the contemporary practice of communion in progressive, free church congregations can become more like Jesus' own meal practices through a focus on spiritual direction and the Hebrew prophetic tradition.
