The author initially supports the practice's legitimacy by describing spiritual direction and offering an historical review of its evolution since the fourth century. The connection between Scripture and spiritual direction is explored to further encourage Protestants to practice spiritual direction. A theological perspective of spiritual direction is proposed, specifically regarding the doctrines of God, revelation, and the Holy Spirit. The last chapter discusses spiritual direction's relationship with evangelicals, gen-Xers, and pastors. It also offers a model of group spiritual direction for Protestants."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Christian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["795851c5-e081-4353-9c00-2c554dd1d015"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135304331034624,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:48:56.949Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:27:30Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:43:24Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"03efe189-6910-40b5-927f-42114825b883","accessControl_ssim":["9b002623-d168-444f-ade4-005a23529c04"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Spiritual leadership as essential for church renewal"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:27:29Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:14:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ee70dc8a-e44f-4bad-a21e-7b38159eb0ee"],"hasLease_ssim":["67d54aeb-dca3-40b0-b188-cbaa49651e42"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Dent C Davis"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Bernice W Kirkland"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Spiritual life--Christianity--Protestantism","Spiritual formation"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["A primary element in facilitating spiritual renewal of congregations is pastoral leadership. Participatory Action Research (PAR) provides an intentional systematic approach for this endeavor. Nine cycles of planning, reflection, and practice of spiritual disciplines resulted in a gradual transformation among participants. Key elements of pastoral life are noted as inseparable from the process of spiritual formation: calling, commitment, community, and conflict. The change experienced during the research process became a catalyst for initiating spiritual formation processes for pastoral leaders.
