The curriculum encourages participation in spiritual formation exercises, communion, and fellowship that open the way for a deeper relationship with God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The retreat model was reviewed and evaluated by a panel of experts in the fields of spiritual formation and Christian leadership. Participants were pastors, therapists, and pastoral counselors who give spiritual guidance within the Protestant tradition.  James Fowler's faith development interview provided a pre-retreat picture of the participants.  The leader used a regimen of spiritual exercises designed to evoke a powerful sense of God's presence for them.  The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Pearson's Heroic Myth Index, and self-projective artwork gave participants ways to engage their personal unconscious material. A perception-test instrument was used to measure perceived burnout among eighty SDA pastors in southern California. Demographic data was also gathered to compare various factors' effects on burnout perception.  Six pastors were invited to a three-day 'spiritual disciplines retreat.' Follow-up testing of both 'retreatants' and 'non-retreatants' was compared to test whether such an intervention had reduced perceived burnout among the test group.
