The value of sermons is suspect. And yet, I serve a congregation where listeners gather every week with a sense of expectation that they will hear God speak to them through the sermon. I am curious about how this expectation develops and how this expectation shapes the congregation. In my context, we emphasize gospel and storytelling in sermons, and so a focus on gospel-centered, story-shaped preaching narrowed the scope of my project. The first step of my exploration attempted to define the gospel. Next, I looked at storytelling. Finally, I looked at preaching and how it shapes listeners within my congregation, Cedar Hills Community Church, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In the final stage of exploration, I convened three collaborative study groups to study preaching texts, discuss sermon preparation and evaluate sermons. I used a narrative inquiry research approach to collect feedback formally from the study groups and informally from the congregation. By listening carefully to the stories the congregation told, I explored this thesis: gospel-centered, story-shaped preaching shapes listeners so that they will be equipped to share the story of Jesus in a way that invites others to lean in and say, “Tell me more.” After spending so much time in a story-rich environment, it made sense to report on the project with a story."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1999"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135627186536448,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:54:04.847Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:36:43Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:55:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d6e5e126-bcb1-4172-a896-546e797178ff","accessControl_ssim":["b301fba7-b1af-471f-9026-2e199b370e6c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Sudden illness and storytelling : identifying spiritual resilience in a liminal space : a phenomenological and narrative research project"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:36:42Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:16:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5f78cc54-c4b0-47c8-afc4-588c7eb764b8"],"hasLease_ssim":["b90dc23d-d3dc-4663-9a38-c5aba2609514"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Chuck DeGroat Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. It assesses the ministry context of Hearts on Fire (HoF), its purpose and ministry values as a newly formed network that glorifies God and serves people. HoF is an interdenominational ministry based in the region of Franconia, Germany, focusing on the renewal of the heart and renewal of faith in Jesus Christ. The name, Hearts on Fire, is also the essence of our programme: to motivate Christians to restore their passion for Jesus, to equip them to serve, and to encourage them in their faith as Jesus did with the disciples. HoF partners with other Christian denominations to initiate new prayer groups and worship events, hoping to inspire the renewal of people's hearts and faith. The research project developed a seven-step framework to guide next generation leaders to implement change. This framework describes how we at HoF, bridge a ministry generation gap and how we can take the next generation on a journey toward a passionate Christian lifestyle by providing a platform for them to be involved in passionate prayer, dynamic worship, and sharing the Gospel through outreach. Gathering participant narratives was part of the research process of how to develop a heart on fire. Narratives were the tools used to engage the next generation in a conversation about what God was doing in their lives. The first research project outcome was this seven-step framework that can be used as a template to bring change and develop further ministry. The second outcome was the development of a next generation leadership day. This day became the platform to identify next generation leaders, to help them grow and learn how to pass on their experiences with God. They learned how to expose others to the experience of prayer, worship, service and testimony, and came to understand how mentors could play a significant role in their development as leaders who are “on fire” for Jesus (Lk. 24:32)."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Tyndale University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["602e7e7c-0b8b-4e09-af87-84c66ff49c48"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133528062164992,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:20:42.967Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:13:48Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:24:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7b6a7fd7-dcd2-4efe-a689-90aff1e00cd0","accessControl_ssim":["47beb459-4a40-47ba-aa40-20042cd60671"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Enabling Emotional Healing and Spiritual Resilience through Guiding and Empowering Veterans to Tell Their Stories"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:13:47Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:46:03Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0fb527c1-77f9-4a2b-bf3a-71cd6242c359"],"hasLease_ssim":["8d2d8fee-b560-4692-bb14-bcd63ddbe9d1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Leadership"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Denver Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Marshall Shelley D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The research method used for this project was qualitative design, particularly narrative with a thematic approach to analyzing the data. Themes are a part of a lived experience or story. A pre-and post-interview was conducted by the researcher with the individuals selected for the small group that met for twelve sessions. The individuals in the small group were given the COPE Inventory developed by Carver, Scheier, and Weintraub and two questions developed by this researcher. his research project set out to answer the question, “What will be the effects of mentoring and empowering individuals to tell their stories on their emotional and spiritual resilience?” The results from the small group showed that the veterans in the group felt more empowered to tell their story by the end of the small group. As the group progressed through each session the researcher noticed that the veterans themselves became more willing to share their difficult stories but they also began to help each other because of similar life experiences. The research showed that members of the small group had not only been empowered to tell their story but also felt a stronger sense of resilience and personal agency to help others tell their story."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Denver Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7af129f-938f-4821-9463-dc6ded35d563"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133743208988672,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:24:08.147Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:12:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:09:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"27cc2daa-0cb8-485a-9d3d-2a9c4cdd8ddc","accessControl_ssim":["4ec9eab9-cea6-46d9-b943-29b4de6694e7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Storytelling as a method of active purification of memory for reconciliation of Korean Carmelites"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:12:12Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:17:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["853b0fed-33f2-41e4-81cb-cf7795ff43e1"],"hasLease_ssim":["1f4fe207-c1e1-4662-8940-fffceb3376b7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"advisor_tesim":["Mary Frohlich"],"year_tesim":["2018"],"location_tesim":["Korea"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Insup Lee"],"publisher_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"subject_tesim":["John of the Cross, Saint, 1542-1591","Reconciliation","Memory","Storytelling","Carmelites"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis-project research is a novel of reconciliation for the Korean Carmelite community through the purification of memory of St. John of the Cross. These stories were shown in worship throughout Lent, 2006, and were accompanied by presentations on the influence of media in biblical and church history. The model illustrates the unique way the preacher/griot can develop a funeral sermon that brings comfort to the bereaved by reframing death through the lens of resurrection."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129259748622336,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:12:52.386Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:08:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:10:20Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"31461db0-f16f-435f-81e0-3e40ca5ade79","accessControl_ssim":["096693b9-8e76-42c5-8735-da6883cd9a63"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["'As the bamboo breaks...': toward retrieving a Filipino theological anthropology using the story of 'Malakas' and 'Maganda'"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:08:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:33:48Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["cd7539a8-1f53-4255-aa51-4418d555d111"],"hasLease_ssim":["5a5217ce-b7e0-441f-8d36-7ba8e4cf41bb"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert J Schreiter"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"location_tesim":["Philippines"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Michael Ariel Montoya"],"publisher_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"subject_tesim":["Imperialism","Church history","Storytelling","Cross-cultural studies"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The Filipino story is marked by hundreds of years of colonial experience. So strong is the experience that a sense of identity is oftentimes unconsciously defined from the standards of the colonizer. The 'westaholic' attitude among the people acquired through years of subjugation makes it difficult to engage a story beyond that of colonial times. 'As the bamboo breaks...' attempts to reveal a story and a history waiting to be understood. It looks into the people's wisdom as told, concealed and preserved by Malakas and Maganda. It is a wisdom that runs through the blood of its people even beyond the colonial experience. It is a wisdom that lives! Christianity needs to listen to this story not only for it to be relevant but for Christianity to continue to live. The dialogue that this thesis proposes comes from the challenge of 'cosmodicy' within a globalized context where the subalterns speak. This dares the so-called experts to actually listen and learn. The story of Malakas and Maganda gives us some keys toward retrieving a Filipino theological anthropology. As such, this local story can be a source and resource of spirituality that can enrich not only the locals but Christianity as well. The kind of transformation that this story leads us to is hope-filled. Yet this can only be achieved as the bamboo breaks..."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b51273d2-7ff5-4ecb-af24-64508c2367ad"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129103375532032,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:10:23.256Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:20:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:45:06Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"18d03112-b683-4540-987c-fa7b516b4b3a","accessControl_ssim":["8eb716bc-b93b-40de-b0dd-390dd24240e5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["I will tell you a story: the use of narrative in pastoral counseling and care"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:20:56Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:51:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["fdd6bd70-caaa-450c-a0a6-b1ac1db670fc"],"hasLease_ssim":["847eb624-61d4-40ab-afcd-b368ccf4c28e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Christine Eaton Blair"],"year_tesim":["1995"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Darrel R Cory"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Storytelling","Pastoral theology","Pastoral counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis for this project was to explore how narrative is effective in making desired change for persons in a pastoral counseling or care setting. In order to accomplish this, the author first researched and developed an understanding of narrative and metaphor. Secondly, the author became conversant with the ongoing discussion concerning narrative theology. The result of the study was to present a process through which it may be understood that faith narrative intersects with personal narrative.
