The author contends that 'telling the story' is a powerful way to foster hope in people who are in the midst of suffering and/or even the process of dying.  The structure of the thesis employs the method of story, expressed in segments of a manuscript which the author wrote regarding the life and dying process of his sister.  The author found that telling the story is healing for both those who are willing to share the story and those who are willing to receive it. The narrative approach to evangelism utilized an inductive presentation of scriptural and non-scriptural stories to prompt multi-dimensional conversion among hearers.  A twelve-member experimental group participated in training in the fall of 1989.  A twelve-member control group did not participate.  Pretest and posttest surveys and other instruments were used to evaluate the effects of training. Participants increased their understanding of the gospel as narrative and multi-dimensional conversion. The method of research was qualitative in that the writer was a participant observer using Whitehead's model of theological reflection. The stated purpose of the project proposal was: to develop a ministry to families that will facilitate storytelling by families and individual family members.  The report describes how one congregation through a ministry of listening, assisted people in rediscovering and reclaiming their stories.  Leis, the author, assumes that the church has been called by God to be a seedbed and spawning ground for stories. That term refers to dialogue, mutuality, and joint stewardship of the Word between preacher and people as they gather around the Scriptures.  Evaluation of nine sermons, sessions discussing views of preaching, and sermon preparation seminars were the methods used; members of Fourth Lutheran Church, Springfield, Ohio, participated. Three pastoral diagnostic variables - communion, repentance, and grace or gratefulness - of the seven pastoral diagnostic variables designated by Paul W Pruyser are found to be significant themes in the life stories of these recovering alcoholics and are used effectively as counseling parameters.  Four of these alcoholics in long-term sobriety are interviewed in oral and written sessions.  Two of them in short-term sobriety are seen in either short- or long-term counseling.
