The author combined various non-biblical narrative media alongside biblical texts to lead participants into their own personal narratives. To validate this theory, the author proposed to introduce into the St. John Baptist youth mentoring program a component of remembering, reclaiming, and sharing stories in the African American tradition, to encourage faith and promote academic performance.  The author researched literature to substantiate the significance of storytelling as a transforming experience.  Research included stories of ancestors, the Black church tradition and personal life stories. The author researched the scriptural mandate for using biblical narratives to teach children about God, and the potential usefulness of developmental theories for children ages 7 to 11.  Participants in the project were trained according to the findings of the research.  After being trained, they taught a new curriculum that reflects the research findings.  Data from focus groups and surveys measured changes in the workers' attitudes and understandings.
