Contemporary Christian loss of mythic, metaphorical thought patterns in favor of literal, rationalistic ways of thinking threatens the survival of the people of God and divests the Scriptures of their power to transform. The project uses secular story and biblical story in a 'sandwich' technique borrowed from the Gospel of Mark in order to restore an imaginative, metaphorical perspective to Christian consciousness so that biblical narrative can be reclaimed as story. To that end, the project appropriates principles of narrative therapy (Epston and White) and Latin American liberation theology for an understanding of solidarity with the poor. Based on a review of literature concerning worldview, animism, and contextualization, the project prepared, distributed, and analyzed a questionnaire among three sample groups: randomly selected residents of Luchou in Taipei County, 60 young men in the military, and 21 acquaintances of church members. They learn least and experience the poorest recall from expositional presentations and other literate styles.  Most literate Gospel presenters use expositional presentation formats when presenting the Gospel among oral communicators. This project employs four years of research and use of Chronological Bible Storying in cross-cultural settings by members of the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board.  The project developed and tested a training module during a workshop in England in 1994.
