It exposes and addresses the relationship between themes, issues and problems of the congregation.  The dissertation presupposes that the factions of the congregation are manifestations of factions in families that make up the membership.  The problems that are unresolved in families show up in interpersonal relationships in the church family.  The biblical narrative model used the favorite stories of a test group of caregivers, such as favorite Bible stories, favorite fairy tales and stories heard from visitations to discover disruptive themes in their personal narratives. The results of this dissertation answer, in part, the search of a pastor for ways to address the pastoral needs of four lay persons as these persons are being trained to give care to other members of the congregation. Electronic media create a fundamental shift from a 'propositional' to a 'narrative' paradigm.  Worldviews fostered by the emerging electronic paradigm have much in common with the oral and manuscript cultures in which Scripture texts originated. The nature, foundations, and consequences of this shift are documented in detail, to support the thesis that participatory performance of Scripture is a powerfully effective mode of establishing and maintaining Christian community. The author created and led a six-week study with a rural and urban group using Thomas Groome and Walter Wink's paradigm.  The experience was significant for most participants.  Intimacy and joy grew over the study period.  Women may have difficulty articulating how they sensed the presence of God, but will struggle to do so. The project's method of study examines the function of narrative theology to biblical story and storytelling with the church being the primary educational setting for children to learn and to experience the biblical stories of faith.  A theoretical base discussing children's religious thinking lays the foundation for biblical storytelling as one paradigm for shaping Christian growth in children.  Two methods for skills development in storytelling for adults are presented.  Complete lessons plans for workshops using the project's research as reference are outlined. Suggested evaluation techniques for workshops are discussed. Small group work with children and program ideas are also presented. To do so entails the use of an inclusive hermeneutic, one which draws us into an intentional dialogue with the text and with one another. The model involves the pastor and a lay team in two sessions to identify the narrative of the church's story.  A survey solicits information and stories from a cross-section of the church membership.  The project showed positive results in that teams from four congregations participated and indicated that they did enjoy, relish and learn from the congregation's stories of life and faith and were helped to discover a number of factors which form a congregation's identity. It was hoped that the process would enhance personal growth for the participants.  The author shared stories for twelve weeks on Wednesday evenings with the congregation.  Members of the congregation would then divide into small groups and reflect upon the story.  Three instruments were used as pretests and posttests: the Myers-Briggs type indicator, the Tennessee Self-Concept, and the Bem Sex-Role Indicator. Chapter 2 looks at biblical storytelling.  In chapter 3 the focus is upon the ways that storytelling can help individuals to change. The fourth chapter assesses the testing instruments.  The last chapter is an evaluation of the project and offers suggestions for future ministry. There was evidence of change and community building. The project adapted Jackson Carroll and James Hopewell's process for congregational study using both research instruments and guided interviews with small groups to develop a church's identity story.  A theoretical base for using story in local church ministry was presented. A narrative of the small group's interaction and reaction to the production of a story of identity was provided. This project tests the premise that an exploration of this tradition will enable laity to witness to their faith.  A small study group of African-American Christians followed a curriculum based on Thomas R Groome's shared praxis model of Christian education, involving interaction with and response to Christian witness.  The study allowed participants to: examine the content of the church's evangelistic witness; explore the experiences of slavery and freedom which have shaped the way African Americans relate the Christian story; and identify prospective means of evangelism in which laity could become active.
