Interviews, sermon analysis and questionnaires were used in seven different congregations at eight preaching events to assess listener response.  For the five preachers in this study, those whose views of the Bible more closely matched their listeners' views used less story, while those whose views vary more from their listeners' views used more story. To address this question the author used the pro-active research method, meeting with the three age groups weekly for twelve weeks. The author assumed that lectio, practiced in a small group, would not only deepen one's relationship with God, but would invite faith sharing from one's life story. This research explores how the use of narrative form and style in preaching increases empathy among the members of St. Matthew Presbyterian Church. After an introduction explaining the rationale for the project, background information about St. Matthew is given.  The two phases of qualitative research-sermon feedback sessions and individual interviews-are reported. Explications of empathy and how these theories played out in the research are woven into the reporting of the research. This research attempts to give new ways of searching for the presence of the Holy by exploring the intersection of theology, the faith stories of five congregations in the Presbytery of Arkansas, and the architecture of the building complexes of those congregations.  The research employed the method of qualitative analysis to find recurrent themes in the faith stories of the congregations as told by long-time members, analyzing those stories through the lens of Reformed theology, and contrasting those findings with the church's architectural expression of faith.  The study found that each congregation expresses its faith in unique ways, both in story form as well as structurally, but that Presbyterians need reinforcement of our verbal vocabulary to articulate how we understand the Holy to be among us as a particularly called people of God. In general, sermons necessitate interpretation, explanation, and application.  In order to accomplish these things without adding didactic components to sermons which are presented as stories or dramas, the preacher must expand the text's events an characterization. This process, described in the thesis, is an exercise in poetic license. By synthesizing four disciplines--narrative/story integration theory, biblical narrative theology, leadership development theory, and attribution psychological theory, a significant relationship emerges between principled story (the dynamic process from retelling to restorying of one's life in Christ) and Christian leader's experiences of overcoming failure.
