The writer assumes that learning and using scripture stories for our own meaning-making is foundational to Christian formation. Bible stories are only one tool among many for a preacher. But without the stories, there is not much for a preacher to draw upon with regards to telling a gospel metanarrative, offering a Biblical allusion or intertextual resonance. The thesis explores the preacher's process of study and sermon-writing, both hermeneutical and homiletical, and poses questions to consider in preaching narrative texts. Through written questionnaires and verbal feedback, parishioners showed signs of theological reflection; the stories helped them articulate theological ideas."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["d722638c-a7e2-43f3-93ff-4762bde0dde7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133448061059072,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:19:26.672Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:37:16Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:53:09Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"39c0812f-1a89-45a5-a5a9-4a23f7144b30","accessControl_ssim":["c651af3c-82d1-403c-bee7-e795c4e47ba4"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Blessing based spiritual nurture: holy listening with prayer, scripture, story, and people as a foundation for confirmation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:37:16Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:48:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c39cd3aa-bc65-4a0b-a1c5-2da663dda4f8"],"hasLease_ssim":["3ccbcf95-fdc4-4aad-9e27-a47ec3620495"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Donald B Rogers"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Barbara D Van Doren"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Parkview United Methodist Church (Miamisburg, Ohio)","Methodist Church","Youth--Religious life","Storytelling--Religious aspects--Christianity","Confirmation--Methodist Church","Listening","Catechetics--Methodist Church","Spiritual life--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Blessing based spiritual nurture, including sacred space, Sabbath, hospitality, prayer manipulatives, accompaniment, blessing, holy listening, and story, was incorporated into two confirmation classes at Parkview United Methodist Church in Miamisburg, Ohio. Yet, most Christian workers still use literate methods even when working in oral contexts. This research focuses on biblical storytelling among oral learners. The primary research strategy was the multiplication of storytellers through intentional training and the collection of verbatim reports of their field experiences. Storytelling was found to be superior for knowledge transfer and for bypassing resistance to the gospel, and consequently more than 200 new congregations were planted. This thesis presents clear evidence of the effectiveness of biblical storytelling among oral learners."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["United Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f0f9c284-37b6-440c-96ab-39e6509e82ee"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128477344202752,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:00:26.227Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:34:27Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:13:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"aa9d30b4-ed8c-4362-b23e-8032f6f64367","accessControl_ssim":["7987ced3-227e-4f89-91a0-9b28d0f91fe6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Men-to-men: telling stories beseeching Christian men to make a difference"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:34:27Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:03:45Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0b861290-8f06-461e-8b72-2b4d7f35e558"],"hasLease_ssim":["3bd21e2a-ec66-49be-b044-e988a5fb33e5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Kent L Poindexter","Felix D Burrows"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ethel Cox Kato"],"keyword_tesim":["Church and community"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["African American Methodists","Greater Allen African Methodist Episcopal Cathedral (Jamaica, NY)","Storytelling--Religious aspects--Christianity","Church work with men","African American men"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The focus of this project is the art of story telling as a therapeutic tool in the restoration of Black males to their patriarchal, leadership roles at the Greater Allen A.M.E. The author presents historical and Wesleyan theological foundations that offer validity for the import and perseverance of such churches. Instruments based on the interaction of biblical narrative, church history, and personal spirituality were designed to advance the spiritual growth of a core study group. The congregation explored methods of reframing their story through historical reflection of past narrative events, faith visioning for the future and community building through creativity and play.
