The aim was involving participants from the Oak Grove Baptist Student Ministry, Bel Air, Maryland to practice mentoring as a discipleship tool.  Many church discipleship practices focused on information assimilation rather than life transformation.  The lack of application exemplified a drastric struggle in the church's educational practices.  Mentorships offered a viable key to effect change in the students' Christian spiritual growth through accountability and personal relationships. Because the emphasis of their education and practice is on the needs of their patients and families, these students often have little time to reflect on the profound theological questions that suffering evokes.  This project addresses the concern that in the process of dealing with profound suffering in their patients, nursing students do not receive adequate support for their own spiritual formation.  Using phenomenological methodology, eleven senior baccalaureate nursing students were interviewed about their experiences with patients who were suffering.  The results of the interviews were analyzed, and four themes emerged: the importance of preparation, the need to acknowledge the reality of the situation, the significance of obtaining support, and the necessity of self care.
