This project attempts to prepare a congregation for times of crisis and suffering by means of a ministry of preaching, teaching, and celebration of Christ's presence in the Lord's Supper. The project implements and evaluates religious drama as a viable proclamation tool addressing an important congregational issue.  This thesis examines the issue of suffering using the book of Job.  It establishes a biblical and theological understanding of suffering and addresses the issue through an original drama, sermon and Bible study. Evaluation consists of questionnaires and interviews of drama participants, Bible study members and congregation. The author found that telling the story is healing for both those who are willing to share the story and those who are willing to receive it. We studied three traditional responses that have been made at various intervals to the problem of evil, that of Leibniz, Augustine, and Calvin, the thought of Walter Kaufmann on the problem of evil, and three non-traditional responses to the problem made by Spinoza, Schleiermacher, Unamuno, and David Ray Griffin.  In a ten week study group we addressed the philosophical problem of evil with a group of interested laypersons. Suffering represents various subjective emotions reflecting absent validation for the pastors. Clergy question their meaningfulness as well as confront the violation of deeply-held expectations regarding their vocation and results of their labors. Clergy seek to improve their circumstances by turning to spiritual, social, emotional, and/or intellectual resources. Greater healing may result, though, as clergy become 'co-creators' of meaning with God. Clergy may eventually integrate the suffering for an enriched faith perspective and enhanced gifts for spiritual leadership. Each of the six sessions included prayer, worship, teaching, discussions, devotional material, and weekly assignments.  The nineteen participants (five men and fourteen women) ranged in age from the mid-forties to the mid-eighties.  Class members showed improvement in handling their own feelings about suffering, in their understanding of the importance of the Body of Christ ministering to each other's emotional and spiritual needs, and in skills in responding to their own and others' suffering. The author will seek to assist those who have had an encounter with evil and suffering to interpret their own experience.  Biblical and philosophical knowledge will be integrated with their personal experience as a means of equipping them to provide care for others who are currently suffering.  The project proposes that attempts to address the problem of evil and suffering through theodicy fail to provide both the adequate theoretical answers and the practical comfort sufferers need.  The project further proposes that the personal experience of those who have suffered uniquely qualifies them to address the suffering of others.  The concepts of a suffering God and the ethical demands of the incarnation will be presented as a basis for a philosophy of ministry to fellow sufferers. The power of personal testimony, the power of presence, the process of grief, and the pursuit of a mature faith will be offered as a means of preparing individuals to provide care for fellow sufferers.
