The setting for the research done to complete the project was in smaller churches with school enrollments of less than 300.  The practicum was conducted over a five-month period.  A survey was constructed for students eight to eleven years old with questions concerning Bible knowledge and spirituality. Teachers were also surveyed to determine their satisfaction with the current curriculum. Adults once distanced from the church have an open door to the church provided them as well as a new place for service and participation.  Children of diverse ages are provided both a new forum for active participation and a time for worship. All those involved are given a new context in which to participate in the narrative message of the gospel which claims seekers and believers in ways which nurture faith and stimulate the enterprise of raising children with biblical faith.  This event, called church school worship, meets contemporary social and religious needs especially prevalent among baby boomer parents. It can serve as a vital and creative tool within a comprehensive family ministry of a local congregation. Chapter 1 shares the background of the project.  It gives the history of the church, the demographics of the area and the purpose of the project.  Chapter 2 presents the biblical, theological and historical perspectives of the use of education to assimilate.  Chapter 3 deals with the sociological factors of assimilation and how they would apply to the local church.  Chapters 4 and 5 cover the actual project.  The results of the project were the training of the Sunday School leadership in different ways to minister to newcomers. This model of the church comes from the gospel of Mark that presents Jesus as a servant.  If we are to fulfill the servant ministry of Jesus in the church, we need to use the laity to reach others.  The challenge is to get the congregation to understand the meaning of a servant church.  The conclusion of the research revealed a need to revamp the organizational structure of the church. A great number of people, however, are not being reached for Sunday school because they are not attracted to the traditional approach of many churches. The purpose of this project was to offer an alternative to the traditional class.  Working from the assumption that many people would be interested in Bible study without the pressure of studying quarterlies, reading in class, and answering questions, the author developed the class.  Two methods of study were employed in the development of the class: a study of current trends in evangelism and church growth was conducted; and, an in-house survey of current church members and a survey of the community were conducted. It was discovered during the process that a need existed for an alternative Sunday school class. It sought through tutelage to improve the cognitive skills of young African American males.  The Sunday school period provided the modus for implementing this module.  The methodology was to pair mentors with pupils, teaching Bible-based principles combined with an analysis of successful African American personalities. African American professional and business persons were also invited to address the group. The project was necessary because of both space and financial restrictions.  A task group was trained with a leadership training manual written by the author.  Participants in the training program were then enlisted to lead new adult small groups.  The project resulted in the establishment of several new groups. Twenty prospects from seven families were discovered in the door-to-door approach.  Ten prospects from four families were discovered in the bulk mail approach.  Nine prospects from four families were discovered in the telephone approach.
