The theory was that the problem could be influenced with improved teaching, more intentional follow-up of absentees, and starting new classes regularly. The theory was tested in a variety of churches, followed by a three-year evaluation.  Results indicated that the theory is correct with some additional factors. The author envisioned retaining and training young married professionals as the answer to this dilemma.  The recent influx of young married professionals into his church gave the author opportunity to implement a discipling project.  The participants were trained in three areas: interpretation of the Bible, teaching methodology, and understanding the pupils.  The entire process took twenty weeks to complete.  Three kinds of evaluation instruments were employed: pre/post-tests, pre/post-session teaching assignments, and questionnaires. This project addresses these needs by pairing home-bound church members with church school members.  The class member makes a weekly visit, plays a tape recording of the class session, discusses and records the home-bound member's reflections on the curriculum, and speaks about and for the elderly member at the next class meeting. The objective is to assist the adult student in approaching John Wesley's contribution to spiritual growth and help him utilize the methods and means offered.  An adult Free Methodist Sunday school class served as the field setting for a pretest inventory, three lessons, posttest inventory, and interview.  Strengths and needs from the pretest determined the lessons' focuses. A subsequent purpose was to present those findings to the Department of Local Church Education of the Wesleyan Church for practical consideration and utilization.  The primary purpose was accomplished through research in records and publications preserved in the denominational archives. The subsequent purpose was accomplished in a seminar presentation to the department.
