Through interviews conducted with these congregants, this work draws out the emotion and sacred views of both those who stayed and those who left for larger cities. Its ultimate concentration focuses on the role of ritual in the rite of passage as marked within contemporary American Reform Judaism known as Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah.  The thesis of the project dissertation is that the Bar/Bat Mitzvah can constitute a key linkage between the synagogue and the family, in which Jewish values and Jewish family vitality can be sustained, and through which the synagogue and thus the Jewish community may be strengthened. It compares data on the American Jewry experience with affiliation data of other dominant religions represented in the United States. The majority of the project is dedicated to the needs assessment survey distributed to members of six synagogues in southern New Jersey.
