The overarching framework used in this project is what Eldin Villafañe refers to as 'the hermeneutical circle in social ethics.' The three steps of this paradigm have been explored from a systems thinking point of view. These three steps each ask a basic question: Clarification -- what is going on? Conceptualization -- what do the Bible and other pertinent disciplines say? Confrontation -- how do we respond? The first step involves doing careful social analysis to gain a broad contextual understanding of the issue at hand (introduction and chapter one). The second step requires biblical and theological reflection, again from a systemic perspective. This involves the examination of pertinent sources of literature and theology that in some fashion inform the issue (chapters two and three). The third step involves developing clear strategies which are consistent with a systemic view of reality and that flow out of the confluence of the first two steps (chapter five). A primary premise of this work is that leadership transitions in general will occur in the church, whether they are planned for or not. This reality is more complex in ethnic churches where oftentimes systemic approaches can be used to address a systemic situation. The primary aim of this study is to confront this reality with effective leadership transitions models and learning, using systemic theology as a guide for change."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130299954888704,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:29:24.404Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:30:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:53:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"80e1985c-4574-418c-bc02-7febc01d91bc","accessControl_ssim":["50ac13bd-872d-4b01-9a67-8c950baedf9f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Embodying Bowen's family system theory and claiming my soul"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:30:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:56:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["da0ab8ba-04e8-4adb-901c-f3ce42ebe12a"],"hasLease_ssim":["1a4156d7-904c-41d9-88a2-cd112896aba3"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Thomas Arthur Boogaart"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["James T Gottwald"],"publisher_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Bowen, Murray","System theory","Clergy--Psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Bowen's Family System Theory offers a comprehensive way to think about human behavior. This paper examines how one pastor embodied the theory in a way that takes into account the more inclusive transformation of the gospel. Bowen's theory helped give the pastor a framework in which to understand events in the life of the congregation. There were, however, problems with how the pastor initially utilized the theory. The goal of objectivity inherent in Bowen's Family System Theory was initially utilized by the pastor as a reason to discount the value of feelings and the pastor's own emotional process. The discounting of feelings encouraged the pastor to continue a pattern of overfunctioning. It shows how the pastor engaged in an overfunctioning/underfunctioning relationship with himself and the congregation. To counteract the pastor's tendency to overfunction, the project utilizes a theology of God's immanence as discerned in the biblical tree of life. This thesis shows how with coaching, practice, and theological reflection, the pastor was able to reconnect with his own emotional process and gain trust in God's salvation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135596750569472,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:35.822Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:27:03Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:34:27Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e820526a-d0ba-43d6-99c5-40816bbb5b34","accessControl_ssim":["ed643a4a-557f-4b30-bf52-87cfe893c74a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Ties that bond: relationships among different generations of women"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:26:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:46:33Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["21ee10c6-b758-4c49-b054-6d78427a6162"],"hasLease_ssim":["5f51b292-137c-4718-9b6c-0659ded61c37"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["St Andrew's College (Saskatoon, SK)"],"advisor_tesim":["Veronica M Dunne"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Bernice J Luce"],"publisher_tesim":["St. Andrew's College"],"subject_tesim":["System theory","Matrilineal kinship","Women--Study","Mothers and daughters"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The focus of the author is to discover what the bonds are like that exist and function among women who share genealogies--daughters, mothers, grandmothers. This is a feminist study using principally but not limited to heuristic and narrative inquiry methodologies."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130621301489664,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:34:30.864Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:24:35Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:00:06Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e49874de-18d5-42b1-a6f0-8ce06b585841","accessControl_ssim":["4c1012c9-114c-4072-8ccc-c9c2c7ba3b07"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The challenge of changing congregations/changing lives"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:24:35Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:40:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c50215b4-2ae3-45cf-847a-506531d76ae4"],"hasLease_ssim":["7c3fd156-9687-4df4-8f76-f0f411e0fead"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Scott Cormode"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Kenneth Ray Brown"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["System theory","Church renewal","Congregations"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The problem addressed by this project is developing a broad systems approach to help congregations fulfill their mission.
