This project is an attempt to show that biblically faithful, expository preaching can benefit from the technological revolution as we try to connect with postmodern people.  The result of the project is a one-day workshop for preachers.  Various subjects were covered.  What does the Bible say about using multimedia in preaching?  How do different generations learn? How can multimedia be used to communicate with different generations? The hypothesis was that when the rural church closes the gap between personal use of media-technology and the use of media-technology in ministry, the result would result in growth.  This project was composed of three stages: recruiting rural clergy and church leaders (Elders/Deacons, Christian Education, Music), having these individuals complete a survey, and obtaining feedback in the form of focus groups.  The recruitment phase provided helpful information from the pastors through completion of the survey as well as submitting names of their leaders.  The second phase helped the researcher obtain the data necessary to formulate accurate detailed information. 'From Text to Talkies' is a workshop that introduced church leaders to the theory and theology behind digital communication, addressed some of the common concerns with 'jumping on that bandwagon,' and modeled ways to communicate the good news in the digital age, including traditional storytelling. Growth was determined from membership, worship attendance, and professions of faith data from 2000 to 2003. A researcher-created survey instrument recorded Internet use. The data yielded the following observations. Churches with higher growth rates exhibiting higher Internet use rates. Growing churches were four times more likely to host a web site than average. Pastors of growing churches use technology that can be adapted for ministry at a higher rate than average. Current and historical controversies continue concerning images, icons, and idolatry.  Worship using art involves preparation, presentation, and processing. Two new committees were established, a process was developed, and a manual written to evaluate and implement new technologies.  The result was the successful implementation of many new technologies at GUMC. The project encompassed a four-year period between 1998 and 2001 and included three-years of focused interaction with thirty-three flagship and representative organizations from fourteen states and twenty-six cities nationwide. Out of research directed to current use of television and video technology in worship and the church's historic relationship to technological change, the project analyzes the consequences of an emerging 'audio-visual language' and resistance to use of video technology in worship.
