The pastor has a wonderful opportunity to stand alongside of these durign a most difficult time in their lives. The project is presented in five sections including why this is a necessary ministry, a survey of the literature, interviews with persons who have cared for a terminally ill person, and recommendations as to further studies. Using the qualitative research method, Grounded Theory, the project collected data through individual interviews with eight staff physicians, six house staff, and seven nurses. All interviewees acknowledged that overtreatment of dying patients makes working in an Intensive Care Unit difficult. House staff acknowledged feelings of failure at the death of their patients. Staff physicians acknowledged that it is easier to continue treating than to make a decision to stop, thus avoiding difficult conversations or ethical decisions. Brueggemann's 1984 work on the Psalms is compared to modern grief theory and used to develop a sermon series and Bible study.  The range of emotions expressed in the Psalms parallels the emotions experienced by a person facing death.  Congregation pre- and post-tests were administered to measure changes in anxiety.  Interview instruments were developed to measure the effectiveness of the sermons and Bible study series. This paper presents the theological understanding of hope in both the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament.  The issue of theodicy and the meaning of suffering is also discussed.  The different theological understandings of hope for this paper come from Jürgen Moltmann, Wolfhart Pannenberg and John Macquarrie.  A theology of dying and pastoral care techniques are described for the different stages of grief.  These techniques are helpful to pastoral caregivers in providing hope for those who are dying.  The community of faith and their importance in providing hope for the dying is not addressed.  Case studies are presented to describe how the author provided hope to the dying through pastoral care techniques.
