This project proposes an additional step in the movement from text to praxis via the intermediary of the theological focus for all types of literature, but especially for narrative. To test the effectiveness of this methodology, a five-part preaching series from the book of Ruth was evaluated to determine the model's effectiveness. It was taught twice at that university by the same instructor with classes of four and sixteen students. Students successfully absorbed the Biblical preaching material, but they did not absorb The seven laws of the learner because of its overwhelming detail. The conclusion was that a course at this level must use books streamlined along the lines of Biblical preaching to avoid 'mental dazzle' or information overload. Although this undertaking concentrates on ministers in the Middle District Baptist Association, the author realizes the same challenges exist among untrained clergy elsewhere. Leading ministers to reach an informed understanding of text as they investigate selected text through questions pertaining to the literal, the historical, and the contextual analysis of a passage contribute to informed understanding. Through an exegetical guide developed as a result of this project, ministers learn to analyze scriptures in a meaningful way that better prepares the preaching of the Gospel. Primary research in this project proves that untrained clergy can benefit from preparation in authorial intent. The thesis is an attempt to be a resource for hands on training to make this preaching a lifelong task.  The thesis begins with chapter one outlining the need for Christ-centered or Gospel preaching.  Chapter two supplies the theological basis for Christ-centered preaching.  Chapter four sets out the homiletics course focussed on a '5C Gospel grid': clarity of the whole, coherence of the parts, correspondence of salvation themes, centering on Christ and challenging with Christ.  The course is based on the sermons in Acts as a pattern of Christ-centered preaching. Current missionary activities in Japan are examined.  A survey was conducted on the teaching of missiology in Japanese seminaries.  Both surveys confirmed the need to establish a clearer understanding of evangelical missiology in Japan.  David J Hesselgrave's textbook, Today's choices for tomorrow's mission, is evaluated as being the best choice among missiological texts for Japanese Christians.  The question whether a dynamic equivalent translation is better than a formal translation is discussed. The approach is as follows: First, the primary data are gathered through the use of a 'Homiletical Questionnaire' which surveyed 104 Protestant and Roman Catholic homiletics professors.  Second, a primary quantitative analysis of the 16 most popular texts is performed by using a 'Homiletical Scorecard' with 261 headings.
