This study first examines the biblical and theological basis for application in preaching, and then explores a range of issues: the importance of and difficulty of application; various approaches to applying God's word; the place of deduction and induction in preaching; the central role of ethos; the value of orality for sermon application; and the relationship between illustration and application in preaching. In addition I interviewed experienced preachers about their own growth in this dimension of their preaching ministry. Four classes incorporated blessing based spiritual nurture elements: creating sacred space, hospitality, holy listening, building community, prayer, and Bible study. The project director also assisted the project participants in the application of Christian theology to their daily hospice service.  In order to achieve this, the project director wrote an eleven-unit biblical reference booklet for the participants and led them in ten related devotions.  The director used tests and conversational questions to evaluate the ministry intervention.
