Students were evaluated by empirical observation, that involved the student, a peer, and adviser, and the discipler, and reproducibility in a second small group.  The students practiced relational skills and the spiritual disciplines of: daily prayer, Bible reading, time stewardship, group accountability and journal keeping.  The discipler served as a mentor and as a model for the disciplines. The pastor felt motivated primarily by affiliation and friendship.  The laity felt the pastor was motivated primarily by socialized power.  A democratic leadership style was present. While the office of bishop is an ancient one for many churches, it is new to the Lutheran Church in America. The Lutheran Church has used this title only since 1980 in Atlanta.  The thesis is confirmed through the use of three methods: historical; analytical; and practical.  The project argues for maintaining the title and function of bishop in the new church for those who serve in a supervisory role with congregations and ministers.  This stance is taken from a practical rather than ontological view of bishop.  The Lutheran church believes that the office of bishop has a special function but not a special status. A structured agenda included sessions on: Fowler's interview questions, Thomas Groome's shared Christian praxis, and Walter Wink's transforming Bible study.  The project uses three evaluation instruments before and after the seven week period to measure positive and negative changes in the lives of the participants. The project centers around the Church as symbol.  The central question is addressed in a practicum which consists of seven two-hour sessions that use the five movements of shared praxis and in thirteen faith development interviews before and after the practicum.  The interviews are conducted according to James Fowler's short interview form.  The data reveals that there is no faith development change when this model is used. The objective of the leader was to offer a program of ministry to single adults in which the participants could explore themselves and their condition of singlehood and could experience personal growth, wholeness, and creativity.  The group met eight times for two hours.  Each session was devoted to examining and reflecting theologically on a specific topic related to singlehood. It is followed by a post-seminar evaluation of a sermon presented in the participants' churches.
