This doctrinal background was reflected in the social and political action which characterized John Wesley and the Wesleyan movement of the eighteenth century. The author researched Wesley's sermons, diary, letters and treatises, and read several textbooks on liberation theology, to discover similarities and contrasts. That term refers to dialogue, mutuality, and joint stewardship of the Word between preacher and people as they gather around the Scriptures.  Evaluation of nine sermons, sessions discussing views of preaching, and sermon preparation seminars were the methods used; members of Fourth Lutheran Church, Springfield, Ohio, participated. This action-reflection project with 19 members of St Paul's United Church was designed to animate lay people within a supportive environment to explore an opportunity for ministry.  Utilizing the Structuralist method of biblical interpretation, T H Groome's praxis method of theological reflection, and papers and exercises on the history and faith of the church, participants explored and wrote personal statements of faith concerning their ministry.  They then identified their gifts and analyzed them according to skills, which were then categorized by priority.  The third section explored personal mission through study papers and a pairing exercise to identify the specific context and meaning of ministry. Five worship services and sermons were used to test developmental strategies on social-ethical themes. After an in-depth analysis of RET, the study examines the difference between a scientific and a theological methodology and reviews the theological method of Bernard Lonergan.  Building upon Lonergan's thesis that a person needs to accept the responsibility to transform him/herself, his/her worlds, and his/her meanings, the dissertation examines a Pauline anthropology to consider the possibilities to equip persons with cognitive insights so that they might be able to do so.
