Centering on the Fourth Gospel, the study integrates two theological dimensions of Advent, judgement and redemption. The fundamental theological program is that in the moment of encounter with Christ, by one's choice judgement is exercised upon oneself and the possibility of redemption either claimed or rejected. Lesson plans, background material on the Fourth Gospel, and study guides are included, as well as liturgies and sermons for Advent. The thesis/text is divided into two parts which address the sociological and theological dimensions of the church, respectively. Part one deals with the context of the church in America, the development of denominationalism, and the church and culture in terms of the church as a product of culture. Part two deals with the church in the New Testament, the views of Luther, Calvin and Wesley on the church, Avery Dulles' models of the church, and considers the views of Karl Barth and H Richard Niebuhr. The thesis/text suggests that our understanding of the church is best expressed in dialectical terms. God is the one who calls us, loves us and reaches out to us first, but there is also a human response. The 'true church' is invisible, but it is also visible."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799717876446265344,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:25:15.544Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:57:45Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:10:43Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9c21b3e9-b838-49c9-b6eb-a6c915ed9b90","accessControl_ssim":["155ca7b6-4f5b-48cb-a9ad-d24bca431a95"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Baptism and eucharist: an ecumenical inquiry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:57:44Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:42:10Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a169a4b8-351b-4247-b1fc-471762a9f048"],"hasLease_ssim":["b9cb1fb7-574d-40da-875b-2bf2a280ce32"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["John D Godsey"],"year_tesim":["1984"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The denominations represented were: Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Progressive Baptist, Southern Baptist, and United Methodist.
