Numerous cultural challenges, as well as a deficiency in theological foundations (particularly one that is distinctively Wesleyan-Arminian) warrant such a study. Both a biblical understanding of the church and a clarification of the historical understanding of the role of the pastor comprises the foundation upon which a culturally relevant pastoral theology may be articulated. Therefore, this project proposes: first, to communicate an internally consistent understanding of classical pastoral theology--a Wesleyan-Arminian perspective. Secondly, a strategy is included that is culturally appropriate for Navajo leadership. The result is a course unit which integrates pastoral theology addressing specifically Navajo culture. The purpose of this project was to engage an important theological text in order to be further formed as a spiritual person and as a pastor.  The fundamental premise of this paper was to know God more fully, is to love God more deeply, which results in serving God more faithfully. The theological context for developing the model included biblical realism, a praxis liberation, and a revised correlational method, particularly in the writings of D S Browning and T H Groome.  The model of pastoral guidance was unlike brief counseling or crisis intervention.  This three to four session model focused on spiritual discernment concerning a particular issue, using guided meditation, homework, and longer breaks between sessions. In this theological reflection project, the author explores the universal claims of the Church in light of the postmodern concept of 'particularity.'  After exploring Postmodernism and the dialectical theology of Karl Barth, the author concludes that the universality of the message of the Church lies within the subjective existence of God revealed in the particular reality of the Church.
