Not many churches have a well-defined plan to promote their members’ ongoing spiritual formation. Yet many pastors in the Reformed tradition have discovered a vision for spiritual formation and renewal in the writings of Gordon-Conwell theologian Richard Lovelace. Lovelace’s Dynamics of Spiritual Life (1979) has been credited by pastors including Tim Keller (Redeemer Presbyterian, New York City) as the most influential book in their philosophy of ministry and church strategy. However, Lovelace’s work was generally theoretical and remains unknown to modern leaders. This study asks: How do pastors and leaders in the Reformed traditions, specifically between ages of 35-50, apply the renewal principles of Lovelace in the life of their churches? Further, how has Lovelace’s vision for spiritual renewal been realized in these congregations?\r\n\r\nThis study will include a review of literature focused on three key areas to understand in promoting spiritual renewal in Reformed congregations: (1) Spiritual renewal according to Richard Lovelace, particularly in the areas of prayer, community, and mission; (2) the apostle Paul’s theology of spiritual life, especially the gospel, spiritual life, regeneration, the Holy Spirit, resurrection, prayer, community, and mission; and (3) organizational and congregational culture, including how churches can promote their desired values, behaviors, and practices in congregational life.\r\n\r\nThis study utilizes a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with six pastors and leaders from various Reformed churches and ministries who are either familiar with Lovelace’s theories or have been unknowingly shaped by them. The methods of qualitative research are detailed, the process and strengths of qualitative research are discussed, and the researcher’s position and the limitations of the study are acknowledged.\r\n\r\nThe interviews focus on gaining data with four research questions: (1) How do pastors in Reformed churches describe their theology of spiritual renewal? (2) How do they promote spiritual renewal among their congregants—in terms of prayer, community, and mission? (3) How do they integrate spiritual renewal into the culture of their congregation or organization? (4) In what ways and to what extent do their views of spiritual renewal compare to Lovelace’s theories?\r\n\r\nThe study concludes with a final discussion of Lovelace’s key insights and contributions, a summary of the findings, and recommendations for promoting spiritual renewal in churches in the future. This is particularly seen amongst those who come to Christ out of a Muslim background. This study began with the desire to increase the effectiveness of discipleship amongst believers from an Iranian Muslim background. It evolved into an exploration of discipleship, its foundations, its meaning, and a pathway that would lead to maturity in Christ. It centered on the question, “How can I help my brother from a Muslim background grow up to maturity in Christ?”\r\nThis question was also affected by concerns about culture. Each culture has its own priorities and concerns, the ways in which people relate, understand each other, and live together. Respecting all people includes understanding their culture. Yet culture is critiqued under the authority of the Word of God. What can be retained, and what needs to be changed, in a culture in which the people are living under the Lordship of Christ? This led to an exploration of the Kingdom of God and His universal directives in discipleship. It includes His unchanging standard of holiness and love. It includes the spiritual battle in which discipleship takes place, in the process of traveling to the Lord’s goal for each disciple, maturity in Christ. It included questions such as, “What is maturity in Christ?” and “How do I arrive at maturity in Christ?” This study proposes to make a start in the discussion of discipleship to maturity in Christ. It presents principles and a pathway towards this goal. Always in view is the application of this process into the lives of dear brothers and sisters who have come to Christ from a Muslim background, of which some examples are included. Utilizing primarily qualitative methods including ethnographic research and interviews, I tested if spiritual reflections on beauty and awe would lead to a desire for more worship outdoors. Scripture, John Calvin and more modern Reformed thinkers provided the theological underpinnings. Scientific thinking was also drawn upon. It was found worship outdoors may both increase openness to beauty and awe, and increase mental wellbeing. The breadth of possibilities for outdoor worship were considered. For some, the language of “story” brings to mind fantasy epics like The Stormlight Archives. However, stories are also central in religious traditions. While many in the Christian tradition reflect upon the stories of scripture regularly, it is not as common to practice storytelling to enhance our own spirituality. This paper, through qualitative research, examines how the use of story, particularly focusing on its use in a Reformed Eucharistic liturgy, impacts the experiences and imaginations of worshippers. L. Schellenberg’s hiddenness argument maintains that the God of theism is a perfectly loving person-like God. That God can be understood by extrapolating human attributes. If people fail to believe in God through no fault of their own, then God must provide evidence in the form of belief to anyone open to believing. Schellenberg assumes that belief in God is involuntary. I examine Schellenberg’s claims from the perspective of Kalām theology (Islamic Rational Theology). I argue that the God of theism is dissimilar to creation and must be understood using reason and revelation. While he explored visual art from a variety of historical periods, Tillich did not explore the major mid-twentieth century art movement called Abstract Expressionism. Tillich’s approach to the theology of art, particularly from a Christian existentialist perspective, works well with the paintings of a key Abstract Expressionist like Barnett Newman whose life and work paralleled that of Paul Tillich. Due to changes in the practices of contemporary painters such as producing written reflections on their own and their fellow artists’ work, today’s theologian of art needs to consider this additional material rather than a single visual work of art taken in isolation. Artists’ statements and writings, the writing of contemporary critics, as well as that of art historians present theologians an expanded body of material to investigate theologically. Even though our faith summons us to Christian unity, our churches remain tragically divided along ethnic, tribal, religious, and political lines. This thesis project developed and tested the Sermon-Dialogue-Sermon preaching methodology to help equip the preachers in Cameroon to mediate peace. \r\n\r\nChapter 1 presents the project’s genesis, ministerial context, and the scope of the problem it seeks to address. Delving into the theology of reconciliation, chapter 2, which is the project’s theological framework, lays the groundwork for a biblical and theological understanding of the nonviolent preaching that emerges in the project's interdisciplinary framework in chapter 3. The project’s homiletic foundations presented in Chapter 4 discuss the sermon-dialogue-sermon method to empower preachers to preach well in a divided zone.\r\n\r\nThe training of two priests and a lay person who, in turn, conducted the sermon-dialogue-sermon method in their different contexts tested its hypothesis before twenty men and nineteen women who had deliberative dialogue with them. Chapter 5 discusses the training and the sermon-dialogue-sermon method in detail and the qualitative and quantitative data obtained through the insider, outsider, and researcher used in the intervention. Chapter 6 describes the thesis project’s identifiable findings through narrative and data analysis, concluding that the Sermon-Dialogue-Sermon Method is proper for the Church to mediate peace in Cameroon. This chapter also discusses the recommendations, lessons learned, and areas for further study.
