Episcopalians, like Christians everywhere, are in need of practical theological help to live out their faith in the workplace. The good news is that we have two sources for daily practical Christian living: the Bible and the Prayer Book. Others have explored the Scriptures; this work explores the Prayer Book. It is a common belief in the Episcopal Church that liturgy shapes our faith. It is, therefore, important work to understand the theology of work in the Prayer Book, and to let it become the mold into which our lives are poured. The thesis begins with a theological study of work in the Book of Common Prayer. This study includes two important works that were fashioned for this study. There is a collection of every text in the Prayer Book that deals with work. These texts were then annotated theologically. The second work is a theological compilation which was composed from the annotated texts. These two documents provided the basis for a theological narrative. The literature search explores two areas. First, it focuses on what has been written about theology of work in the Book of Common Prayer. Second, it includes all known American Episcopalian authors who have written on the general topic of Christianity in the workplace. These authors have a number of helpful and interesting ways to reflect on life at work. Finally, a weekend retreat plan is provided. The purpose and format of the retreat are designed to reflect and respond to the various theological points that are found in the Prayer Book. The retreat ends with a Holy Eucharist that is designed to bring liturgical closure to this weekend and to this study."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132003254403072,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:56:28.797Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:15:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:47:36Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e3fa0015-2587-42ea-b3a2-8b19c0ad3027","accessControl_ssim":["0167d482-f6e7-482b-9742-db98ef8afab2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["We shall walk together: training men for leadership in the Assemblies of the Emmanuel Church, Baltimore, Maryland"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:15:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:39:21Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f414646b-a8b0-4d71-9608-cf29f51ab45f"],"hasLease_ssim":["33c10746-5958-4426-8d12-a32974ab13ed"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Beeson Divinity School"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Durant K Harvin"],"keyword_tesim":["Practice (Theology)"],"publisher_tesim":["Beeson Divinity School of Samford University"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Theology","African American men"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["It is the contention of the project director that if there is to be a viable balance of male and female leadership in the African-American church for generations to come the church must be intentional to train and mentor men for leadership with the same veracity of commitment given to the inclusion of women. A qualitative research project was conducted, which included a literature review and interviews with twelve EPC pastors all of whom had at least ten years of ministry experience. This study confirmed the author's initial belief that preaching through Revelation is being neglected by EPC pastors. factor's such as absence of significant seminary training in Revelation, a perceived lack of practical application for today's listener and a deficiency of pastor's personal study in the book were all contributing factors. The study suggests further research that could help reverse this trend."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130667720900608,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:35:15.133Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:08:35Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:22:48Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"af1be710-b401-402d-8e62-3211294e4667","accessControl_ssim":["f949d5ee-1d37-4e4d-955e-d23de2f9211c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A footnote on dreams as a medium God uses for communication"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:08:34Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:11:09Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["849dc330-e357-4f29-8dcc-b7bbec3e9213"],"hasLease_ssim":["31f68f81-07e0-4f05-a83c-839f7f1d8ee4"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Bruce G Epperly"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The Minor Prophets communicated during times of natural and national crises. Much misunderstanding still exists concerning the biblical role of a prophet and the nature of prophetic speech. The work is concerned with the questions raised by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City and the evangelical response both in print and the pulpit. A primary premise of the work is that there was/is a misunderstanding or denial of the possible chastising role of God upon the USA in 9/11. Prior to 9/11 many evangelical pastors and spokespersons decried the sins of America and warned of possible and even deserved judgment. When a national crisis such as 9/11 occurred, however, which seems to parallel the circumstances that God used to gain the attention of an errant nation in the Bible, many of these same pastors were either silent concerning judgment or vigorously promoted patriotism and 'just-war' retaliation against perceived enemies. The goal of this thesis is to encourage pastors to consider God's possible chastisement of the nation, and to help pastors avoid common 'pitfalls' when preaching prophetically."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130427783643136,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:31:26.311Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:06:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:57:30Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a1379229-4719-4f0c-bc58-37cdd33a9605","accessControl_ssim":["b480be71-c3cf-417b-b8b0-d4f28bcc02b2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Spiritual practices: a basis for an approach to preparation for membership in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:05:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:50:00Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7cc34279-00e7-4ccc-89e4-1873c4e1ddf1"],"hasLease_ssim":["126bb250-0e51-4c7f-a56d-bc2b2c988b7c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Andrew Dreitcer"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Kendrick E Curtis"],"keyword_tesim":["Practice (Theology)"],"publisher_tesim":["School of Theology at Claremont"],"subject_tesim":["Spiritual formation","Theology","Seventh-Day Adventists"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In spite of the fact that personal spirituality is central to the life of faith for Seventh-day Adventists, the preparation for membership in the Seventh-day Adventist Church has traditionally given little attention to cultivating spiritual practices as the containers which hold spiritual lives, shape identities, and provide the lenses through which doctrine is viewed and understood. Instead, it has tended to rely upon approaches which focus primarily on conveying information, especially that which is distinctive to Adventism, leaving spiritual formation to somehow occur as a by-product. This project proposes a practice-based approach to the process of preparing people for membership in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This approach is primarily designed around spiritual practices, but it also provides for the full engagement of the church's fundamental doctrinal beliefs. Drawing from the works of Clifford Geertz, Alasdair MacIntyre, Craig Dykstra, Dorothy Bass, Miroslav Volf, and their colleagues, a model of spiritual practices is developed and explained. This model is then placed in conversation with approaches currently in use by Seventh-day Adventists. As a part of this dialogue, pastors in the Southeastern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists are surveyed to surface areas of concurrence with, or resistance to, the idea of a practice-centered approach. Next, possibilities are explored for developing an approach that would suggest a list of practices central to Seventh-day Adventist experience, which, when engaged, would also provide a context for reflecting upon the fundamental points of church doctrine. Finally, a description of what this approach might look like in the context of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is suggested, based on the practices of engaging scripture, awareness, Sabbath observance, wholeness, anticipation, worship, discernment, hospitality, service, and community."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132070747045888,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:57:33.163Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":288,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
