Lesson plans, background material on the Fourth Gospel, and study guides are included, as well as liturgies and sermons for Advent. That term refers to dialogue, mutuality, and joint stewardship of the Word between preacher and people as they gather around the Scriptures.  Evaluation of nine sermons, sessions discussing views of preaching, and sermon preparation seminars were the methods used; members of Fourth Lutheran Church, Springfield, Ohio, participated. We studied three traditional responses that have been made at various intervals to the problem of evil, that of Leibniz, Augustine, and Calvin, the thought of Walter Kaufmann on the problem of evil, and three non-traditional responses to the problem made by Spinoza, Schleiermacher, Unamuno, and David Ray Griffin.  In a ten week study group we addressed the philosophical problem of evil with a group of interested laypersons. The latter teaches that man, the creature, estranged and enslaved in sin, is distinct from God, the creator, but he through faith can be reconciled to God by the death of Christ on the cross. Part two deals with the church in the New Testament, the views of Luther, Calvin and Wesley on the church, Avery Dulles' models of the church, and considers the views of Karl Barth and H Richard Niebuhr. God is the one who calls us, loves us and reaches out to us first, but there is also a human response. The group explored the baptism and eucharist sections of the Faith and Order document Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry, and provided feedback to the World Council of Churches.  The denominations represented were: Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Progressive Baptist, Southern Baptist, and United Methodist.  The project brings together some basic aspects of sacramental theology, the historical journeys of the various liturgical traditions represented in the group, and the convergence in sacramental thought that characterizes the present ecumenical community. This action-reflection project with 19 members of St Paul's United Church was designed to animate lay people within a supportive environment to explore an opportunity for ministry.  Utilizing the Structuralist method of biblical interpretation, T H Groome's praxis method of theological reflection, and papers and exercises on the history and faith of the church, participants explored and wrote personal statements of faith concerning their ministry.  They then identified their gifts and analyzed them according to skills, which were then categorized by priority.  The third section explored personal mission through study papers and a pairing exercise to identify the specific context and meaning of ministry.
