Will they be able to live more consistently as Christian disciples in the world? This project seeks to answer these questions a pretest/posttest questionnaire administered to 68 laypersons.  The experimental group of 34 persons received six hours of theological instruction. The control group of 34 persons received no instruction. The project studied a Third World church that serves as a model for Haymarket Baptist Church, helping it to experience another culture in order to see its own more clearly. In its place we find a subjective, enculturated 'gospel,' clinging to the paradigms of the Second Great Awakening and lacking epistemological power to generate effective evangelism.  A fresh appropriation of Wesley's understanding of evangelism provides a critical means to evaluate current choices and to generate a model of narrative catechesis. Three black pastors helped to create an interview protocol that could explore and define the black church tradition in the UCC. The interviews analyzed the pastor's context in ministry, authorization for ministry, Sunday morning worship practices, preaching, music, communion, baptism, special days, and printed resources used in worship. The reports reveal a remarkably consistent worship practice that reflects the black, 'rural' worship tradition of this region.  A central ritual act of nearly all churches in the study is believer's baptism by immersion. The church has participated in and is living through a major cultural shift.  In this context this project examines the cultural shift and the generation that has come to exemplify this shift: the 'baby boomers' born between the 1946 and 1964. A similar time of anxiety and discontinuity is found in the Gospel of Matthew.  The project examines two texts that illustrate Matthew's Christology and ecclesiology--the 'Great Commission' and the Beatitudes from the 'Sermon on the Mount,' Matthew 28:19-20 and 5:1-16--and compares them to find understanding and identity for mainline denominationalism.
