Second, it describes an eighteen-month spiritual journey with eight lay women and men.  The discipline itself consists of three movements: centering, empowering, and serving.  A series of questionnaires was used to evaluate whether their commitment to ministry and mission deepened. Data was gathered through surveys, written descriptions, and by personal interviews.  The research shows that there is a wide variety of experiences, many related to death and dying, regarded as important to faith; that persons experienced paranormal events; that the classic mystical experience is rare.
