Drawing from Johan Huizinga, James Evans, Henri Nouwen, and Harvey Cox, the element of play is defined and placed firmly within the soul of the church and its people. Hugo Rahner, Edwin Friedman, Martin Marty, and Michael Koppel laid the groundwork for the element, to “not-take-yourself-too-seriously.” This embodied theology is further elucidated by Plato, Jurgen Moltman, Julia Cameron and Mary Hess. The term Holy Fun seems oxymoronic. How can one have fun in the pursuit of the Holy or conversely, how can one be holy while having fun? But the idea of Holy Fun is counterintuitive for most folks. Holy Fun does include a Theology of Fun. Although Holy Fun can be applied to all aspects of ministry, including conflict management, educational approaches, outreach ministry, staffing, leadership training, mission life, and worship, its potential employment is only limited by the imagination. I have helped to consolidate four United Church of Christ congregations with Holy Fun as the vehicle of change. This path to church consolidation is presented as a case study in Holy Fun. This is not a “how to” program that can be completed step by step, but a philosophy of playful and lighthearted approach to all aspects of ministry that can be learned by pastors, church leaders and pew sitters and will aid congregations in their futuring together."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860296636825600,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:42.475Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d34b2b6a-ba51-476d-8db8-5b4af27cba2e","accessControl_ssim":["def68457-69f9-42e2-94d1-41a859a557aa"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["An evaluation of the breakthrough in the 80’s financial stewardship program of the Penn Northeast Conference of the United Church of Christ"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["125e840e-4149-4bfb-92e2-8e953e226d49"],"hasLease_ssim":["97f453da-af72-4367-86dd-f57a3a140062"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1993"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The intent of that program was to help local churches obtain, from their members, more money for the ministry and mission of the Church. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the Breakthrough in the 80’s Program. The first task will be to offer an overview of the development of stewardship as a key theological concept. Secondly will be presented a brief historical sketch of the UCC churches in the Conference, tracing their origin to the German people who first came to the shores of North America in the seventeenth century. Next will be offered a description of the program itself, including its original purposes, its evolution over the decade it was offered, and a listing of the resources used. The evaluation of the Breakthrough Program will be presented in an objective and subjective manner. The numbers and statistics will present the facts of the program’s effectiveness, while the insights gained from the subjective evaluation will offer learnings that often speak louder than mere figures. The final section of this paper will offer overall conclusions reached about the success of the Breakthrough Program as well as render insights that could prove helpful for anyone else endeavoring to construct and implement a similar program in the future."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860289609269248,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:35.773Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:08Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:11Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"954652d9-e328-45eb-bc89-2db3bd1d93c1","accessControl_ssim":["f344e02a-c8ec-479a-8d13-87ad9a6b2d90"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["An instrument to identify what prospective members want to know about the church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:07Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["04589384-2022-491e-ae1a-3507fc4b47f6"],"hasLease_ssim":["240bc94b-9560-46c5-ac26-e2b9381912bd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1980"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The instrument was developed in consultation with a committee of recently admitted members, and pilot tested with a group of prospective members and with a group of recently admitted members. The envisioned instrument and its administration is not, of course, an end in itself but part of a large process of education which it is intended to serve. It is not, however, the purpose of the project to specify or delineate such an educational process: the forms and contents of such a process may be many and the possible uses of the instrument manifold. Nonetheless, certain suggestions as to both the use and the limitations of the instrument have been included in this study. This study was done within the content of the United Church of Christ. By staying within the context of the denomination, the number of variables was reduced. However, the contribution of this study is not limited to the United Church of Christ, and the instrument which it produced is adaptable. The originality of this study lies in the methodology for achieving the instrumental objective; in utilizing the resources of a steering committee of recently admitted members to identify the content and language of the instrument; and in the validation of the content and language by pilot testing with a group of prospective members and with a group of persons admitted to a United Church of Christ congregation within the last two years."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860265393455104,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:12.678Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:07Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:10Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3e7ca913-d124-440b-994b-8df47aae35d9","accessControl_ssim":["f98abebd-e5d8-4ed2-a0e6-dde8a12cbf02"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["What laity expect of clergy: a case study"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:06Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d8941fcb-ffde-4362-b1c3-4dcc65638a1f"],"hasLease_ssim":["24220d49-498d-451c-870c-0ff5dceaf509"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1980"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Since that time I have been personally involved on two occasions in the placement process of the United Church of Christ. After my initial entry, I have made one other move within my adopted denomination. The second placement was accomplished while this doctoral project was in progress. I perceive inadequacies in the placement process of the United Church of Christ, differing in nature from the deficiencies of the United Methodist process. No placement system devised by the mind of man can work perfectly. But my personal experience in two dissimilar systems aids in analyzing the merits of placement practices of the United Church of Christ. Two major studies of placement in the United Church of Christ have been conducted by the Research Center in Religion and Society, located at Lancaster Theological Seminary. The first study, “Placement and Deployment of Professionals in the United Church of Christ,” was conducted in 1973. The second study, “Pastoral Search Committees,” was conducted in 1975. These studies identify problems in the placement process in the United Church of Christ that match my own experience. This project is an attempt to deal with the problems identified in those earlier projects. The study on search committees suggests that probably the most serious omission committees make is in not adequately preparing for their tasks (e.g. preparing statements of needs and goals, conducting studies of the congregations, deciding the qualifications they want the minister to have, preparing a job description) before interviewing a candidate. This study suggests that committees seeking a pastor seem unaware of the professional qualifications that they want their pastor to have, or how to describe qualifications adequately. As a result, many committees make their final decisions on more than subjective impressions about the personality of the candidate."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860240738287616,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:49.161Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:40Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9bdcf7ac-c5a8-4f12-9bb7-cf9ac7c9bbd4","accessControl_ssim":["251d3b3a-d65d-4ab0-8a52-5bf45c3dbcdc"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Planned pastoral home visitation: a survey of present practices with recommended strategies"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:37Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["695bf79d-145e-4170-b11f-66de89294b52"],"hasLease_ssim":["62367d18-9c21-4972-bb24-3cfa3bc4ed42"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1977"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The information from these questionnaires was then coded and processed through the data processing facilities of Penn State University and the University of Michigan under the supervision of Dr. Loyde Hartley of Lancaster Theological Seminary. The information gleaned from this effort has become the basis for Chapter Two, which is a discussion of where pastors are today in regards to the practice of home visitations, to endeavor to note the effects of that practice on congregational life and finally to bring together any helpful strategies they presently are using in this regard. In doing the latter, the project placed these present-day pastors in the midst of the ongoing forensic, which has been taking place in relation to the practice of home visitations over the last seventy or more years, which is the subject for discussion in Chapter One. That chapter endeavors to show that there is (and it may be that there has always been) a continuing significant undercurrent and resurgence of increased interest in this matter with the profession in recent years. Finally, Chapter Three attempts to set forth an overall strategy for home visitations, using my own approach as a kind of structure, enlarging upon and firming that design with the insights of prominent practical theologians who have written on the subject throughout the same seventy or more years mentioned above, as well as the data discussed in Chapter Two. Finally, the research recommends certain directions for continued study. It may be helpful for me to acknowledge that this project, as it has been carried out, has been pursued primarily in terms of visitation as a function of the professional pastor."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860232747089920,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:41.545Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-05-02T00:46:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-02T21:04:58Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ff7bb166-d08c-4cc6-be27-42dc55b834d6","accessControl_ssim":["7e72dcb9-17ec-4945-9e03-d34aca0e0f3a"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["7babf9a5-e97f-4696-a959-7d83592c4964"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["7babf9a5-e97f-4696-a959-7d83592c4964"],"depositor_ssim":["jkomperda@pts.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["jkomperda@pts.edu"],"title_tesim":["Whenever You Eat: Exploring the Dynamics of Connection and Disruption in the Eucharistic Meal"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-05-02T00:46:48Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-02T21:04:58Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a3915c4c-a9aa-4798-936e-4c46cf15ce10"],"hasLease_ssim":["1de6ca4f-8c38-421a-981c-6826d0fcb522"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min.
