Spirituality is here defined as one's personal relationship to God. Jesus makes this very clear in his teachings in the New Testament. In chapters 5, 6, and 7 in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus shows how to live a personal spiritual life that affects the individual and the world. Christian leaders focus too often on programs and statements at the general level while trying to improve the ministry of the church, but goal setting and programs alone do not improve ministry if they do not reach individuals and set their hearts afire for the ministry they are called to do. The early church in the book of Acts attests to the importance of one's spirituality (Acts 2:42). The early church fathers and church reformers were deeply aware that if spirituality is to be found within the church it needs first to be found in the hearts of individuals who are responsible for ministry (Wesley, 'Wesley's Use' 63). Wesley particularly emphasized the importance of spirituality in the life of lay ministers. United Methodist ministry today and leadership of the local church are based on laity and clergy cooperation. United Methodist annual conferences and districts provide continuing education for clergy. One of the most important goals for district superintendents is to take care of the spiritual formation training for their pastors. Little spiritual training, however, is offered for local lay leaders, especially for those serving in small membership churches. This dissertation defends the view that spiritual formation instruction for lay leaders, based on a Wesleyan model, makes a difference. The Bible, prayer, Holy Communion, Christian conferencing, and fasting are still basics for personal spirituality."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134140750364672,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:30:27.271Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:08:13Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:31:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4f48af16-5769-4085-9d5e-dd0bca79a68b","accessControl_ssim":["3255076e-6b79-4b7c-b649-51f5b6adae04"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Staying power: pastoral tenure in church planting"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:08:12Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:27:44Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ffc80ae0-fedb-4157-8b0f-23662b2bd091"],"hasLease_ssim":["0c384b57-38a9-4741-a375-a3e9775d43f6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Burrell D Dinkins"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"location_tesim":["Indiana"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Stan R Buck"],"keyword_tesim":["Clergy--Tenure"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church history","United Methodist Church","Church development, New","Clergy--Appointment, call, and election"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study compared the relationship between pastoral tenure and congregational growth in the churches planted by the northern Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church from 1980-2000 and sought to discern the causes of pastoral turnover in those churches. The author suggests that what has been traditionally termed and understood as the 'Black Church' is not a sufficient descriptor of the experience of African, African-American, and Caribbean people coming together as one community of faith. Thus, the project seeks to lead the congregations to embrace their cultural diversity using a new paradigm: 'The Africultural Church'. The term 'Africultural' is used to describe a multiethnic faith community of persons of African ancestry, which strives to be wholly Christian and multicultural, yet celebrates its Africanness. It is understood that issues arising form ethnocentrism may challenge this new community. Specifically, there may be cultural distances and stereotypes that must be overcome to effectively engage in ministry. To this end, the project explores the cultural consciousness of the three congregations with respect to worship practices, mission and ministry, and lay leadership; best practices derived from these Africultural ministry settings; and the role of the pastor in leading the congregations to more faithfully embrace their cultural diversity. A model of community transformation is also proposed, which uses Bible study and a study circle process to raise cultural consciousness and promote diversity. Liberation theology, John Wesley's notion of a 'catholic spirit' and personality development theory are theological and theoretical foundations for the model. Using this model, the project seeks to identify held stereotypes and cultural conflicts in one congregation and move that congregation toward the affirmation and wider embrace of its cultural diversity. From that experience, further implications for pastoral leadership and ministry strategy in Africultural communities are drawn."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799714856870346752,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:37:15.852Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:39:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:05:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b117583e-9dd8-4335-957a-42a82ca67cb4","accessControl_ssim":["1b19fc56-1f0a-4bfc-8a4c-9f729887de35"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Welcoming the stranger: practices of hospitality as a prophetic witness to gay and lesbian persons in the United Methodist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:39:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:14:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6ac141cc-3a3f-4d94-97a2-a4a4454c7bff"],"hasLease_ssim":["83d0fbf2-1130-411e-ad01-92797420aeaa"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Christopher H Evans"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John Patrick Colatch"],"publisher_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Gay men","Lesbianism","Hospitality--Religious aspects--Christianity","Church membership","United Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Thesis: Practices of hospitality can be a prophetic witness of welcome for gay and lesbian person in the United Methodist Church. The author researched opinions of biblical scholars and Christian theologians, interviewed gay and lesbian Christians, and studied three congregations in order to develop models of hospitality that welcome gay and lesbian people into the fellowship of United Methodist congregations. A trajectory of welcome for the stranger was developed, using the books of Ruth, Isaiah and Mark. That focus of inclusion offers a foundation for biblical and theological rationales for alternative understandings of hospitality and concrete expressions of welcome offered by actual congregations.
