This project challenges two assumptions as the church seeks to respond: (1) there is a formula for success in multi-ethnic ministry, and (2) small churches are not likely to be successful. This project is an anthropological narrative of a small, rural Anglo United Methodist Church in Tennessee that initiated and sustained an effective multi-ethnic ministry with Hispanics. The tension between the church as a movement and as an institution will be explored. Chapter one explores the character and fate of small membership churches in the twenty-first century. Chapter two reviews the history of small membership United Methodist churches in Maine. Chapter three introduces the district conference project, defines holy conferencing, and details the three events in the Mid-Maine District where transformation tools were taught to small membership churches. The Zimbabwean United Methodist Church is continuing to experience considerable numerical and spiritual growth. However, pastors do not have educational resources which are adequate to train new members and mature old ones. The preparation of candidates for baptism and confirmation is identified as a critical need and the project focuses on developing materials to be used by pastors in this preparation. The intent is to equip pastors with teaching strategies and tools (rather than lesson plans), and material is compiled from historical and biblical perspectives. Resources utilized include conversations with district superintendents and pastors, surveys of church members, and archival material accessed in Zimbabwe. The approach is an integration of scripture, self-esteem, and United Methodist doctrine in a series of sessions that include lecture and discussion. The project did not produce results outside standard deviation. Sermons from district superintendents and interviews with formerly unchurched United Methodists are utilized to clarify the Wesleyan answer to this perennial question.
