With the population decline and aging of the Upper Midwest, many congregations are no longer able to support full-time ordained pastors. Congregations of several denominations have pressed into service licensed local pastors, and other lay persons to preach. United Methodist preachers serving in rural parishes in Iowa were coached in various aspects of preaching. As the Chairperson of its Order, the author examined the question: how can the Order of Elders be a viable body which will increase the number of elders in its activities and nurture them spiritually?  First the author explores the history of peer accountability and the creation of the Order of Elders based on the Wesleyan tradition and theology/doctrine.  Then the author presents a case study from the author's own experiences. A review of pastoral care and homiletical literature was conducted; twenty experienced United Methodist elders were interviewed; and four sermons were submitted that had been preached on a Sunday immediately following a preacher's difficult life event. After analysis, it was discovered that preachers relate to the topics they preach about. A survey was distributed to the clergy of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference of the United Methodist Church to assess their experience of the dark night of the soul. Interior influences like struggles with sexual issues, low self-esteem, and moral conflicts contributed to a greater experience of the dark night of the soul. He surveyed numerous campus ministers, did some case studies, and did independent research into budgets.  The author found that some ministries lost one hundred percent of their funding in the blink of an eye while others were thriving. As the United Methodist Church in particular continues its numerical decline there is a renewed effort to discover models for ministry that are actively and missionally engaging the communities they serve. This case study of Solid Rock United Methodist Church provides one such model. From the research five transferable insights emerged.
