It is even more difficult in a congregation made up of members from the baby boomer and baby buster generations.  These individuals have an aversion to making commitments.  This project teaches deacons how to maintain involvement of baby boomers and baby busters in an effort to reduce the growing number of inactive church members.  The project begins with training of deacons over seven weeks.  Deacons then interview inactive members to determine what factors led to their reduced involvement. The project consisted of training for a telephone committee which would make appointments for visitation and visitation teams which would make the visits and report back to the church.  A unique element of the project was the inclusion of communication skills in the training adapted from secular sales strategies.  Procedures and forms were developed which aided in the structure of the visitation program.  Descriptive survey methodologies were used in the evaluation of the project. Aggressively taking advantage of the privilege of being invited into people's homes and lives, the author explored Scripture, tradition, and church history to understand the importance of pastoral visitation.  Questionnaires were sent to pastors and clerks of session on Long Island to understand their involvement in various areas of pastoral ministry.  Nine months were spent in visitation with emphasis on twenty-five individuals or families.  Some of these people were later interviewed to see if they valued the visits. Training was by means of lecture, role play, discussion and reflection.  Evaluation of the course was done by participants and by leader.  The course drew heavily from clinical pastoral education. Lay visitors were recruited and engaged in ten training and supervisory sessions.  During three months they visited active and inactive church members.  Parables of Jesus provided a framework for understanding the visitations.  Listening, caring, motivation and other pastoral skills were demonstrated, practiced and applied.  Various problems and opportunities were encountered and dealt with in recruiting, motivating, and training visitors.
