Because many ministries to this population are patronizing in nature, leave out the families, and are not intentional in training and implementation, the need was felt to develop a plan which would be more comprehensive and intentional. The author includes a study of attitudes toward persons with disabilities, and two questionnaires.  Some pastoral care theories and practices are reviewed.  Conclusions are affirmative of contributions made by pastors with disabilities.  Those who have 'been there' do create a better sense of rapport with clients or parishioners going through painful life experiences. After reading many books and materials in the fields of evangelism and pastoral care, the author established criteria that would give the program integrity, both theologically and practically.  He established the need through personal evaluation and a survey, and then developed the training program and relayed the dynamics of the training sessions. Fifteen pastors and twenty-eight parishioners were interviewed concerning pastoral visitation.  There are biblical and historical reasons for the pastor to visit parishioners to share the Christian faith and to give spiritual guidance.  The majority of the pastors interviewed visit in hospitals and homes where there is illness or crisis, but not routinely all parishioners.  Parishioners want this pastor to visit them regularly, but by appointment.  They want the visit to be social. For the Episcopal Church with a catholic heritage, this presents the opportunity for evangelism in proclamation, catechesis and worship.  One form of proclamation is the evangelistic call.  The project consisted of reporting on evangelistic calls that were unstructured and person-centered. The multi-faceted responsibility of pastoring a local church makes the practice very difficult. A study of the development of pastoral care in scripture and history led the author to define pastoral care as leading people into holy living through their faith in Christ within the context of the local congregation provided a foundation for developing praxis for the responsibility. The mutual ministry of the people provides care that has been the objective of pastoral visitation. The main reason is that there are very few pastors and no lay Christians trained to provide such care. The goal of this project was to train laity through practical, experiential, and clinical methods to engage in effective hospital visitation. This goal was achieved by training laity to provide pastoral care for hospital patients. The author planned for participants to attend eight sessions totaling sixteen hours of training. In these meetings they received instruction and participated in group activities. The first six sessions focussed on a basic understanding of pastoral care, the nature of hospitalization, the personal identity as a pastoral caregiver, the guidelines for the hospital visit, a model of pastoral conversation, and writing and presenting a verbatim report. The participants made five hospital visits after the sixth session.
