These women believe in God, sometimes pray, but rarely read the Bible. They are uncomfortable with certain beliefs that they associate with churches, but they appreciate church rituals and want to expose their children to Christian stories and values. Their busy lives are influenced by insistent messages from a consumer culture. Their husbands generally have little interest in church. The project argues that prevailing language constructs function in ways that inhibit development of a healthy sense of self, especially for women. The white-maleness of American language powerfully shapes experience in the family, in society, in therapeutic settings, and in worship. Psychological analysis of self-development invites an assessment of the language used to describe human development. Theology calls for an examination of the language used to formulate its theories and its messages. Eight of the 11 participants experience an increase in self-esteem as measured by the Tennessee Self-Concept
