This transformation can take place even though a person's background has been challenging. This work was born out of the writer's desire to meet the cry of the empty human heart. In this work the question of the church's role in spiritual formation will be examined and it will be evidenced that the church of today has come up short and must re-examine where they are in their own process of spiritual growth. The writer explores attitudes and mind sets that churches fall into that can inhibit parishioners in their journey toward transformation. The case studies in this work have been designed to be user-friendly with both individuals and groups. The literature search examined biblical, theological, and historical foundations.  The field research was conducted using a basic questionnaire with twenty questions to conduct open-ended, guided interviews.  The sample consisted of key Pentecostal leaders from the Assemblies of God and key non-Pentecostal evangelical leaders serving in strategic positions with ministry experience of over twenty-five years.  The literature search revealed that theologians and practitioners of church history who overemphasized either the Word or the Spirit fell into error, portrayed a lack of balance, and caused division in the church.  The field research revealed that despite the differences in theologies and labels, the work of the Spirit was pretty similar. By distinguishing too sharply between the Word and the Spirit, the church has lost an important biblical perspective and fractured the Body of Christ. There are three supporting perspectives: 1) Dietrich Bonhoeffer: the church is Christ's presence in the world; preaching must convey the risen Christ present in the assembly. 2) Alexander Schmemann: preaching incarnates the word as a sacramental event revealing God's presence. 3) Richard Lischer: preachers must preach Jesus, not about him. Grounded in the unique message of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection, Christian preaching partners with theology, as they are mutually supportive. Most preachers desire to be successful in their pulpit ministry yet many question whether or not it is. The purpose of this thesis is to define successful preaching and list the results a preacher can realistically expect through the faithful preaching of God's Word. The basis of this thesis is the nature and authority of the Word of God. The author will posit that the Bible, the sixty-six books of the Christian canon, is the authoritative Word of God and, therefore, is powerfully effective to bring about change and growth in the lives of the listeners. The effective power of God's Word is, however, affected by three variables: the sovereignty of God, listener response, and the message preached. While the preacher cannot control either the sovereignty of God nor listener response, he is able to remove the obstacles to the faithful and effective preaching of God's Word. This thesis begins by laying the theological foundation for building a case for success in preaching: the nature and authority of both God's Word written and God's Word preached. Next, the vast field of homiletical literature will be explored in order to define the criteria that can be used to the purpose and process of a preaching groups that was formed to encourage successful preaching. This project experiments with sermon and worship planning in a retreat setting involving clergy and laity, with lectionary texts as a focus of activities. It seeks help from communications theorists and God's word of reconciliation. Theorists offer communication skills and the view of human nature these skills presuppose.  The Word provides a key to completing the definition of human nature and a solution to the dilemma of people alienated from God and from each other.  The thesis states that the collective witness of Christians will be more understandable, relevant and persuasive when the above contributions are used.
