The sessions explored basic models of communication, understanding oneself in the context of communication, developing verbal skills, developing nonverbal skills, and developing listening skills.  Two testing instruments were used as pre-tests and post-tests.  Test scores indicated a significant increase in interpersonal communication skills. Lay care-givers (elders and deacons) attended a two-day workshop in which they were presented with a brief history and explanation of pastoral care and spirituality, and introduced to the concept of 'spiritually centered pastoral care' or spiritual direction by lay care-givers. Thirty-eight out of 125 massage therapists returned a questionnaire which concerned their practice of massage, the use of prayer, and their spirituality.  A workshop on massage, body theology, and anatomy was conducted within a Lutheran church.  Theological issues concerning the interpretation of the flesh need to be dealt with in order to feel comfortable having a hands-on experience. The Bruggemann grid of orientation was used to frame the teaching of theological integration. These workshops were designed to foster continuing education and personal growth relating to grief and anger issues faced in the hospital context.  Preworkshop and postworkshop questionnaires were used to gather information.  The preworkshop questionnaires showed an adequate understanding of both anger and grief. This project used a series of workshops to educate clergy about spouse abuse.  In the workshops the clergy learned about the characteristics and personalities of both victim and perpetrator.  The workshop examined their knowledge of spouse abuse.  Most clergy are not equipped to minister to victims or perpetrators.
