Three black pastors helped to create an interview protocol that could explore and define the black church tradition in the UCC. The interviews analyzed the pastor's context in ministry, authorization for ministry, Sunday morning worship practices, preaching, music, communion, baptism, special days, and printed resources used in worship. The reports reveal a remarkably consistent worship practice that reflects the black, 'rural' worship tradition of this region. A central ritual act of nearly all churches in the study is believer's baptism by immersion. Immersion matches the believer's experience of death of the old life and rebirth in Christ and parallels the Sunday morning experience of death to the old, destructive, secular world and rebirth into the beloved community of the church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873194178248704,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:51:42.529Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:35:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:49:26Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3aabf251-48fa-46ab-8135-1f4dfd85bf0f","accessControl_ssim":["0cebf166-0156-47cf-a89b-43f8e892c0f6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Costly worship: a seminar to help members of the Conference of Mennonites in British Columbia to pursue a better worship life"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:35:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:50:05Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8b55463b-81ca-48d1-8aea-2dfd4e964e70"],"hasLease_ssim":["1fbb7a7b-8088-4049-9f3c-1d80a0597ee5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Canadian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Jacob P Klassen"],"year_tesim":["1995"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David K Chiu"],"publisher_tesim":["Canadian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Worship","Conference of Mennonites in Canada"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project is to understand the worship situation and needs among members of Conference of Mennonites in British Columbia (CMinBC) and to develop a seminar to help them pursue a better worship life. By historical analysis, present-day survey and observation, and case studies, the conclusion is that the cultic historic liturgy as the motor which drives parish life leads to strengthened mythos and energized ethos. Adults once distanced from the church have an open door to the church provided them as well as a new place for service and participation. Children of diverse ages are provided both a new forum for active participation and a time for worship. All those involved are given a new context in which to participate in the narrative message of the gospel which claims seekers and believers in ways which nurture faith and stimulate the enterprise of raising children with biblical faith. This event, called church school worship, meets contemporary social and religious needs especially prevalent among baby boomer parents. It can serve as a vital and creative tool within a comprehensive family ministry of a local congregation. This study is an analysis of social and theological aspects of the need and purpose of such a worship service as it has been carried out under the auspices of Davidson College Presbyterian Church (Davidson, North Carolina)."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128361857187840,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:58:36.090Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:04:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:22:39Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"cfce6254-f546-442d-93bb-87db00d448e0","accessControl_ssim":["6c88f667-a4d8-4f4b-9d44-1dd0d7de4cf4"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The exegesis of culture as a critical component of Christian corporate worship"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:04:14Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:04:57Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f4c1e96c-2601-446e-8140-aef9a91e82e5"],"hasLease_ssim":["e8600cf3-cfee-4b50-9a36-c519cd3c59d2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Nazarene Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Albert L Truesdale"],"year_tesim":["1994"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Randy T Hodges"],"publisher_tesim":["Nazarene Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christianity and culture","Worship"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The cultural context in which one ministers should help shape the mode and content of Christian corporate worship.
