The author combines practical suggestions for contextual preaching with perspectives from theological, missiological, biblical, and cultural studies. He claims that preaching is more effective when it is rooted in the context of the audience. The author illustrates this claim by analyzing four sermon samples, which embody some aspects of the religio-cultural ethos and communication forms of the Yoruba. The analysis demonstrates how contextualization could facilitate the proclamation and reception of the Christian message in diverse contexts."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131954456821760,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:55:42.260Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:29:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:46:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ff72a476-db13-4e4f-a678-4657190f9724","accessControl_ssim":["502d8c0a-39cc-4940-9d59-f35a194c6065"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Theoretical analysis of culturalized ceremonies among the Yoruba Christians in selected US cities: indigenization versus syncretization"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:29:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:26:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4edfbdd9-abb2-4164-a1cb-6514c17b6edb"],"hasLease_ssim":["02359dfa-3dc8-4117-9bad-558d378abf04"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Biblical Seminary and School of Missions"],"advisor_tesim":["Lindsay Hislod"],"year_tesim":["1995"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Solomon A Babalola"],"keyword_tesim":["Indigenization of worship"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Biblical Seminary and School of Missions of Columbia International University"],"subject_tesim":["Yoruba (African people)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This dissertation project endeavors to analyze theologically a number of culturalized ceremonies among the Yoruba Christians. In Chapter 1, the author has explored the biblio-theological context of the problem, examining an overview of Yoruba culture and religious concepts. The review of precedent research literature in cultural anthropology and cultural ceremonies mostly related to the 'rites of passage' which have to do with elemental symbolism used in these family ceremonies are in Chapter 2. A definition of the research search strategy, implementation, analysis, and reporting of data are focused in Chapter 3. An opinion poll, reported in Chapter 4, was conducted among Yoruba Christians resident in selected U.S. cities, to determine prevailing trends in cultural inclination towards or away from syncretization. Of all respondents, 60.75 percent are opposed to syncretizing of culture-related worship. In Chapter 5, the author focuses a theological, biblically based educational program designed to assist Yoruba ministers and members deal contextually with family worship, without drifting into syncretism."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131362346926080,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:46:17.579Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:47:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:36:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"25b1773a-6169-4702-90d1-2326d8c8880d","accessControl_ssim":["0c99c785-ac8a-4b85-8e42-254f62e04708"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Challenging the current theology of ministry of care for Yoruba Evangelical Churches of West Africa in Nigeria: a proposed alternative"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:47:27Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:14:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["35ece7ff-2cae-4813-8c62-59d3b8a37844"],"hasLease_ssim":["82c1639d-10f0-407a-a141-25a8216e3465"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Boston University"],"advisor_tesim":["Merle R Jordan"],"year_tesim":["1993"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John Aboyeji"],"publisher_tesim":["Boston University School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Yoruba (African people)","Pastoral theology","Evangelical Church of West Africa"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The Evangelical Churches of West Africa (ECWA) in Nigeria, though it views traditional methods of healing as anti-Christian and therefore forbids their use, provides little of the counseling, support and direction so important and expected in the Yoruba culture.
