This thesis suggests several approaches to equipping and empowering young adults to have confidence in their own faith narratives, and then to share those stories with others. The researcher employed a case study and grounded theory approach to examine the current 'postmodern' culture which has shaped the outlook and opinions of today's 20-somethings, particularly their attitudes toward spiritual matters and Christianity. Within the context of the congregation this writer serves, he sought to structure a conversation among young adults currently active within the church and those without through surveys and interviews. The church is made of people of every age, and without the young adults the church cannot be whole. This project provides a young adult ministry program that has enabled these young people to become active in the church and grow spiritually. The project grew out of the commitment that I made when I was chosen to be a youth worker. The eight models of spiritual formation created by Arthur David Canales were found to be useful for designing a spiritual formation retreat and four lesson plans for identity that nurtures Syriac spiritual identity in the St. Ephraim congregation in generative ways. Groups of young adults participated in a mission-biased experiential curriculum over 16 weeks. Nineteen groups were located in nine cities around the U.S. Quantitative research was done before and after the indepth interviews were done after the sixteen weeks, in order to assess participants' experience of community. The author examined biblical, theological, cultural and developmental approaches to loss and grief; interviewed college students, individually and in groups; and gathered input from other college chaplains with regard to how they provide pastoral care through public worship.
